President Zardari Approves Major Legislative Reforms and National Honors

The federal government has achieved a significant milestone in its pursuit of institutional and legal modernization with the approval of a wide-ranging series of legislative measures. In a press release issued recently, it was confirmed that President Asif Ali Zardari has officially endorsed a comprehensive legislative package designed to reform multiple critical sectors. These approved bills span areas such as national citizenship, media regulation, social welfare, and housing, reflecting a strategic push by the administration to update the country’s legal framework for 2026 and beyond.

At the heart of this reform package are several high-impact amendments, including the Pakistan Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Naya Pakistan Housing and Development Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2026. These measures are expected to streamline administrative processes and address long-standing challenges in national identity management and affordable housing. Additionally, the President gave his assent to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Newspaper Employees (Condition of Service) Amendment Bill, 2026, signaling a dual focus on strengthening media oversight while protecting the labor rights of those working within the journalism industry.

The legislative overhaul also extends to social and cultural sectors. The Zakat and Ushr (Amendment) Bill, 2026, was approved alongside the National Archives (Amendment) Bill and the Associated Press of Pakistan Corporation (Amendment) Bill. Furthermore, the President sanctioned the Daanish University Islamabad Bill, 2026, and an amendment regarding the Prevention and Unauthorized Use of Pakistan’s Names and Emblems. These moves demonstrate a holistic approach to governance, ensuring that everything from religious contributions to the preservation of national history is governed by modern and efficient laws.

In addition to the legislative approvals, President Zardari made key appointments and conferred prestigious national honors. Eazaz Aslam Dar has been appointed as a Member of the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) under the Balochistan quota, a move aimed at ensuring fair provincial representation in the country’s top civil service body. Recognition was also given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to their respective fields, with the Sitara-i-Imtiaz being conferred upon Professor Sarwar Muhammad Khawaja, Rashid Malik, and Zain ul Abideen Ahsan for their distinguished services.

Marking the upcoming celebrations of Eid-ul-Fitr and Pakistan Day, the President also exercised his constitutional authority to grant a special remission in sentences for prisoners across the country. This humanitarian gesture is a traditional part of national festivities, intended to provide a second chance to those who have shown good conduct while serving their terms. These remissions are carefully calculated to exclude those convicted of heinous crimes, ensuring that the spirit of the holiday is balanced with the requirements of public safety and justice.

The implementation of these reforms is expected to have a lasting impact on Pakistan’s governance structure. By updating laws related to media, housing, and citizenship, the government is positioning itself to better handle the complexities of a modern, digital society. As these bills transition into active law, the focus will shift toward the various ministries and departments responsible for executing these new mandates and ensuring that the benefits of these legal improvements reach the general public.
