The federal government has successfully initiated the first phase of the Prime Minister Fuel Package 2026, utilizing digital financial infrastructure to disburse 1.2 billion rupees in relief payments. This initial batch has reached more than 32,000 beneficiaries across the country, primarily targeting the transport and logistics sectors. According to official reports, the recipients include operators of trucks, buses, long-haul vehicles, and delivery vans who have been facing the brunt of escalating energy costs. By opting for a digital-first approach, the government aims to ensure that financial assistance reaches the intended individuals with maximum speed and minimal administrative friction.
The disbursement was executed through the Easypaisa digital bank platform, which officials have lauded for providing a secure and transparent channel for large-scale fund transfers. This partnership marks a significant shift away from traditional, cash-based disbursement systems that are often prone to delays and transparency issues. As the first digital wallet to facilitate these specific transfers to truck operators, Easypaisa has set a new benchmark for public-private partnerships in the social welfare space. The next phase of the program is already being mapped out, with plans to extend financial support to tank lorries, bus operators, and motorcycle owners in the coming weeks.
This digital initiative is a direct response to the rising cost of fuel, providing immediate relief through real-time transfers that beneficiaries can access instantly. The move is designed to stabilize the operational costs for the transport industry, which is essential for maintaining the supply chain of basic commodities and keeping public transport fares within reach of the general population. By delivering funds directly into digital wallets, the state is effectively bypassing the bureaucratic bottlenecks associated with physical payment centers, allowing transport workers to focus on their essential duties without taking time off to collect subsidies.
Jahanzeb Khan, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Easypaisa digital bank, expressed the institution’s commitment to supporting national relief efforts. He noted that the platform is honored to serve as a bridge between the government and the citizens, ensuring that timely financial relief is delivered through a reliable digital ecosystem. This project underscores the scalability of digital banks in Pakistan, demonstrating their capacity to handle high-volume government-to-person payments while maintaining a high level of security and data integrity for all users involved in the program.
Federal Minister for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja highlighted that digital payments are a fundamental pillar of the nation’s modernizing financial system. She emphasized that such systems promote transparency and financial inclusion at a scale that was previously unattainable through manual processes. With a user base exceeding 59 million and a vast network of agents operating in both urban and rural areas, Easypaisa is uniquely positioned to support the Prime Minister’s vision of a digitally empowered Pakistan. As the government continues to refine its social safety nets, the integration of fintech solutions is expected to remain a central strategy for efficient governance and economic resilience.
