Pakistan Finance Minister Outlines Shift Toward Sustainable Growth and Virtual Asset Regulation

Pakistan has officially transitioned its primary economic strategy from short-term stabilization toward long-term sustainable growth, anchored in elevated export performance, increased domestic and foreign investment, strict fiscal discipline, and ongoing structural reforms. Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb outlined these strategic priorities during an interactive engagement session with participants of the URAAN Overseas Pakistanis Summer Scholars Programme. The six-week internship initiative, organized by the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, brings overseas Pakistani students and young researchers from top global universities to collaborate directly with public sector institutions.

Welcoming the scholars at the Finance Division, Senator Aurangzeb commended the program for building stronger links with global Pakistani talent. He encouraged the participants to maintain active connections with their home country and leverage their international education, research capabilities, and technical exposure to support national economic transformation. Briefing the delegation on the broader macroeconomic outlook, the Finance Minister highlighted the structural stability achieved over the past two and a half years, noting that policy efforts are now firmly oriented toward driving durable, production-led economic expansion.

Regarding international finance and sovereign borrowing, Senator Aurangzeb pointed to measurable improvements in the sovereign credit profile of the country and renewed access to global capital markets. He highlighted the inaugural Panda Bond issuance as a landmark achievement in diversifying foreign funding channels through innovative debt instruments. These financial milestones demonstrate growing confidence among international investors and credit institutions regarding the long-term reform trajectory of the national economy.

In a key policy update regarding financial technology, the Minister briefed participants on the formal establishment of the Pakistan Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority. Described as a forward-looking regulatory framework, the new authority is designed to foster responsible innovation across digital asset markets while maintaining stringent legal oversight. This regulatory mechanism positions the national financial ecosystem to capitalize on emerging global digital finance opportunities while safeguarding consumer interests and preventing illicit capital movements.

Addressing the national business environment, Senator Aurangzeb detailed ongoing federal measures to reduce operational overheads for commercial enterprises. Key initiatives include rationalizing tax frameworks, improving access to affordable business financing, and securing competitive energy tariffs for industrial consumers, alongside structural measures to boost export competitiveness. He stressed that sustainable economic expansion relies heavily on enhancing industrial productivity, fostering technical innovation, and diversifying export product lines. The interactive session concluded with an open discussion addressing climate finance, trade promotion, and foreign direct investment opportunities.
