NIC Karachi and UBL Launch National Innovation Hackathon 2026 to Drive FinTech Innovation

The National Incubation Center Karachi, an initiative funded by Ignite under the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication, has partnered with United Bank Limited to launch the UBL National Innovation Hackathon 2026. The collaborative event brings together twenty-five shortlisted teams from across Pakistan for an intensive seventy-two-hour competition aimed at developing next-generation technology solutions for the national financial, banking, and digital payments landscape. Competing for a grand cash prize of five million rupees, the hackathon features a diverse participant base comprising university students, technology startups, software developers, academic researchers, and digital innovators. Beyond serving as a competitive event, the initiative is structured as an innovation launchpad, providing high-potential teams with long-term technical mentorship and institutional incubation support. Participating teams will refine their concepts into scalable, market-ready applications aimed at accelerating digital finance adoption across the country.

Speaking at the opening session, Head of Creative Technology at United Bank Limited Abdur Rehman urged teams to prioritize building practical, customer-centric applications that resolve real-world user challenges. He noted that while the hackathon operates as a competitive exercise, its fundamental value rests in cross-disciplinary experimentation, institutional collaboration, and continuous skill development. Rehman highlighted the expanding influence of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and advanced data analytics in transforming modern financial services, reaffirming that UBL views technology-driven innovation as a core pillar of its broader digital transformation strategy.

Highlighting the scope of the project, Project Director at NIC Karachi Syed Azfar Hussain emphasized that the platform connects emerging technical talent with industry mentors, operational resources, and specialized infrastructure. He added that the competition marks the formal launch of an extended innovation track delivered through the UBL-powered FinTech Lab. Under this framework, selected teams will continue refining their digital products to ensure technical stability, regulatory compliance, and commercial readiness before launching them into the domestic market.

The initiative aligns with NIC Karachi’s broader mandate to foster public-private ecosystem partnerships that drive economic growth and financial inclusion. Established in 2018 at NED University in Karachi, NIC Karachi is operated by LMKT and Lucky Landmark in partnership with Orbit Ventures. Since its inception, the center has incubated more than four hundred and forty startups, generated over twelve billion rupees in revenue, enabled ventures to raise over thirteen billion rupees in investment capital, and supported the creation of more than one million direct and indirect jobs. The center provides specialized facilities, advisory services, and dedicated innovation labs across fintech, industrial automation, and media technologies.
