World Bank Group Institutions Join Türkiye’s Groundbreaking Industrial Decarbonization Initiative

The Ministry of Industry and Technology of the Republic of Türkiye (MoIT), in partnership with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), has launched the Türkiye Industrial Decarbonization Investment Platform (TIDIP) in Ankara. This strategic initiative is a major step towards Türkiye’s transition to a low-carbon economy, focusing on decarbonizing its industrial sector in alignment with the country’s national climate goals, including those outlined in the National Green Deal Action Plan, the updated Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), and the 2053 Net-Zero target.

The TIDIP aims to accelerate the transformation of Türkiye’s industrial sector by reducing its dependency on fossil fuels and promoting the adoption of renewable energy and low-carbon production methods. The platform will focus on enhancing energy efficiency, driving innovation, and ensuring economic competitiveness. By fostering a greener industrial base, the initiative will also bolster Türkiye’s energy security and promote sustainable economic development in the long term.

The platform will prioritize decarbonization efforts in key energy-intensive industries, including iron and steel production, primary and secondary aluminum, cement production, and fertilizers. These sectors are considered critical for achieving substantial reductions in carbon emissions and are identified as priority areas for transformation. Additionally, the initiative will consider other strategic sectors, contributing to a comprehensive low-carbon transition.

Guided by four Low Carbon Pathways developed with the support of EBRD and completed in March 2024, TIDIP will provide a roadmap for decarbonization, helping Türkiye navigate the challenges of reducing emissions while maintaining economic growth. These pathways are designed to support the country’s efforts in making energy-intensive industries more sustainable and competitive on the global stage.

A key component of the TIDIP initiative is its emphasis on attracting investment and fostering collaboration among various stakeholders. The MoIT will oversee the platform’s operations, coordinating efforts between industrial companies, technology providers, engineering firms, development agencies, and sector associations. This collaborative approach will help accelerate the adoption of low-carbon technologies and create long-term economic and environmental benefits for Türkiye.

To ensure the successful implementation of TIDIP, two dedicated Technical Assistance components will support the initiative. The first component focuses on coordinating stakeholder engagement, communication, and outreach efforts. It will also include monitoring and reporting, as well as providing policy advisory services to the MoIT in alignment with both national and EU climate goals. The second component will assist individual companies within the industrial sector in preparing tailored decarbonization investment plans, offering expert guidance on how to transition to more sustainable practices.

TIDIP is a significant step in positioning Türkiye as a regional leader in industrial decarbonization and green innovation. Through this transformative initiative, Türkiye not only contributes to global climate change mitigation efforts but also creates a sustainable future for its industrial sector. The platform’s emphasis on collaboration, technical support, and strategic investment promises to deliver lasting positive impacts, both economically and environmentally.
