Karachi, September 5, 2025 – The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has officially declared that all banks across the country will remain closed on Saturday, September 6, 2025, to mark the religious occasion of 12th Rabi-ul-Awwal, 1447 A.H., observed as Eid Milad-un-Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa-Sallam). The announcement was made through a circular issued by the central bank, addressed to the presidents and chief executives of commercial banks, development financial institutions, and microfinance banks.
According to the notification, the SBP and the entire banking system will remain closed for the day in line with the government’s broader holiday schedule. The closure applies to all bank branches nationwide, ensuring that operations are suspended uniformly across Pakistan. This decision reflects both regulatory consistency and respect for the significance of the religious occasion.
Eid Milad-un-Nabi, commemorating the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), is deeply meaningful in Pakistan, where the day is observed with reverence through religious gatherings, conferences, and processions. The declaration of a bank holiday facilitates public participation in these activities by easing work-related obligations and giving both employees and customers the opportunity to join communal observances.
The SBP emphasized that customers and businesses should plan their financial dealings in advance to avoid inconvenience during the closure. With banks, development financial institutions, and microfinance branches remaining closed, routine transactions such as deposits, withdrawals, and corporate banking services will be unavailable for the day. This advisory is particularly important for enterprises and individuals who rely on in-person transactions, as the interruption could affect daily financial activities.
The announcement also underscores how national institutions integrate cultural and religious practices into their operational calendars. By aligning with government notifications on public holidays, the State Bank continues to ensure that banking schedules remain transparent and predictable for the general public. The practice further demonstrates the balance between financial operations and cultural traditions in Pakistan’s economy.
Eid Milad-un-Nabi has historically been observed with widespread enthusiasm in Pakistan. Streets and neighborhoods are illuminated, religious processions are organized in major cities, and conferences focusing on the Prophet’s teachings are held nationwide. The closure of financial institutions, therefore, provides additional space for communities to focus on these events without the pressure of financial obligations.
Normal banking operations will resume on Monday, September 8, 2025. Customers and businesses are encouraged to utilize digital channels such as mobile banking apps, online transfers, and ATMs during the holiday period to meet urgent financial needs, although in-branch services will remain suspended.
The SBP’s decision reflects the central role of religion in national life and ensures that institutions operate in harmony with the cultural values of society. By giving the day official recognition through a nationwide bank holiday, the financial sector aligns itself with the sentiments of millions across the country.
