PPL completes successful workover at Adam West X-1 ST well in Hala Block

Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PSX: PPL) has successfully executed workover operations at the Adam West X-1 ST well in the Hala Block, situated in the Matiari district of Sindh Province. The development was confirmed in a company statement, underscoring PPL’s ongoing efforts to optimize hydrocarbon production and contribute to Pakistan’s energy security. The Hala Block is operated by PPL with a 65% working interest, in partnership with Mari Energies Limited, which holds a 35% stake.

The Adam West X-1 well originally made a significant hydrocarbon discovery in the Lower Goru formation in September 2014. Production commenced in June 2015, providing a reliable source of natural gas. However, by 2019, the well encountered operational challenges when a water breakthrough caused a complete halt to gas flow. Multiple remediation attempts, including efforts to isolate lower water-producing intervals, were unsuccessful, necessitating a more technically advanced solution.

Following extensive reservoir modeling and evaluation, the decision was made to drill a sidetrack from the existing wellbore to bypass the water-affected zones. The workover operation began in October 2025 with the primary goal of completing the well above the water-producing intervals. The strategy aimed to restore gas production while ensuring long-term operational stability and reliability.

The operation involved precise engineering and careful execution, integrating rig-based drilling techniques to sidetrack the well effectively. After the workover, the Adam West X-1 ST well achieved a production rate of approximately 8.5 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) with a wellhead pressure of 540 psig and a choke size of 58/64 inches. These results mark a significant milestone in the Hala Block’s production history, effectively reinstating a key gas source that had been offline for several years.

PPL has announced plans to tie the newly reactivated well into the existing Hala facilities following rig demobilization. This integration will enhance overall block production efficiency and streamline gas delivery to the national grid. The successful workover demonstrates PPL’s technical capabilities and commitment to sustaining energy production in challenging reservoir conditions.

The company emphasized that this achievement aligns with its broader mission to support Pakistan’s energy infrastructure, economic development, and national prosperity. By restoring production at Adam West X-1 ST, PPL contributes to meeting domestic energy demand, reducing reliance on imported fuels, and strengthening Pakistan’s energy security framework.

Industry observers have noted that this workover sets a benchmark for similar operations across mature fields facing water ingress issues. PPL’s proactive approach illustrates the importance of advanced reservoir engineering, strategic planning, and the use of modern drilling techniques to maximize hydrocarbon recovery and extend well life.

The successful execution of the Adam West X-1 ST workover reinforces PPL’s position as a key player in Pakistan’s energy sector, demonstrating its ability to overcome operational challenges while ensuring sustainable energy production.
