Agritech Limited has temporarily shut down its urea production plant after Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) suspended gas supply due to pipeline damage caused by flash floods in the Baka Khel area. The company disclosed the development to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Monday under Section 96 of the Securities Act, 2015, as well as relevant listing regulations, signaling a significant operational disruption in the fertilizer sector.
According to Agritech, SNGPL has invoked force majeure following the damage, leading to a complete halt in gas supply to the plant. As a result, the urea facility will remain non-operational until gas flow is restored, affecting production schedules and potentially impacting the fertilizer supply chain in Pakistan.
The company stated that gas flow is expected to resume once repair work on the damaged pipeline is completed. Agritech emphasized that it will continue to provide updates to the market as the situation develops, highlighting the temporary nature of the shutdown while repairs are underway.
The Baka Khel area experienced flash floods, which caused severe damage to critical gas infrastructure, prompting SNGPL to suspend deliveries to ensure safety and operational integrity. The suspension has affected other industrial users in addition to Agritech, reflecting the broader impact of natural disasters on energy-dependent industries in the country.
This development underscores the vulnerability of Pakistan’s industrial and agricultural sectors to extreme weather events, particularly in regions where key gas pipelines serve as the lifeline for production facilities. Fertilizer producers like Agritech rely heavily on continuous gas supply for urea production, making timely restoration essential for both domestic supply and export commitments.
Agritech Limited has assured stakeholders that it is monitoring the situation closely and will resume production promptly once the pipeline is repaired. The company’s disclosure to the PSX aligns with regulatory requirements for transparency and investor communication, ensuring the market remains informed of any material operational developments.
Industry experts note that such interruptions can create temporary supply shortages, which may influence fertilizer prices and availability in the domestic market. Continuous monitoring of pipeline repairs and weather conditions will be critical in determining the timeline for resumption of operations at Agritech’s urea plant.
Overall, the suspension of gas supply due to the Baka Khel flash floods highlights the interconnected risks of natural disasters, energy infrastructure, and industrial production, reinforcing the need for contingency planning and infrastructure resilience in Pakistan’s key economic sectors.
