Bank of Punjab Denies Cyberattack Claims, Confirms Technical Glitch in Credit Card System

Karachi: The Bank of Punjab (BOP) has dismissed reports circulating in the media and on social media suggesting a cyberattack on its systems, terming such claims as inaccurate and misleading. According to the bank, routine monitoring identified irregular credit card transactions, prompting an immediate internal review. The investigation concluded that the issue resulted from a temporary technical glitch in the credit card system, which allowed a limited number of existing customers to execute unauthorized transactions.

BOP emphasized that the affected cases were not associated with any government initiative or scheme, including the Asaan Karobar Card, and involved only a defined group of credit card holders. The bank clarified that the system issue was not the result of any cyber intrusion. The identified technical gap has since been fully rectified, and a system update conducted on January 2, 2026, was unrelated to the credit card matter.

Recovery and remedial actions are underway following standard banking procedures. Most impacted customers have already approached the bank and started settling over-limit amounts, while further measures continue to ensure all issues are addressed. The bank stressed that claims regarding the total financial impact are highly speculative, exaggerated, and incorrect, noting that the situation remains fully manageable.

BOP also confirmed that affected credit card holders have been directly contacted. Customers who have not received communication from the bank remain unaffected and face no risk. The bank urged all customers to exercise caution against unauthorized advances and to engage only with verified bank officials after proper identification. Customers were advised not to entertain any individual whose legitimacy appears doubtful.

The clarification is part of the bank’s broader public awareness campaign aimed at educating the public about cyber-fraud risks. In a growing digital financial landscape, such initiatives are designed to prevent misinformation, promote security awareness, and reinforce confidence in banking systems.

Officials from BOP highlighted that the proactive response and communication reflect the institution’s commitment to safeguarding customer interests while ensuring operational resilience. The incident underscores the importance of robust monitoring and timely intervention in financial technology systems to prevent isolated technical issues from escalating into broader concerns.

The bank’s statement reinforces the need for vigilance among consumers while emphasizing that Pakistan’s banking institutions continue to prioritize secure, efficient, and reliable financial services amidst the expanding digital economy.
