The Government of Pakistan has digitized nearly 4 million historical records as part of an ongoing initiative to modernize the National Archives of Pakistan and preserve the country’s documentary heritage. The programme is being implemented under the Public Sector Development Programme project titled “Strengthening & Modernizing National Archives of Pakistan,” with the objective of protecting historically significant material while improving the way archival information is stored and accessed.
According to documents available with Wealth Pakistan, the digitization programme has so far covered approximately 2.7 million pages. The material includes rare books, manuscripts, newspapers and other historically significant documents held within the National Archives. By converting these records into digital formats, the government is working to protect valuable documentary material from physical deterioration while creating digital copies that can be retained for future use.
The modernization programme also includes the restoration of 50,000 historical records. According to the Associated Press of Pakistan, the restoration work is intended to protect archival material from deterioration and ensure that important historical records remain available for future generations. Restoration and digitization are being undertaken as complementary measures, with physical preservation helping safeguard original materials while digital conversion provides an additional layer of protection and access.
The digitization effort extends beyond conventional paper documents. A range of archival materials, including photographs, microfilm rolls, audio recordings and video recordings, has also been converted into digital formats. The inclusion of different types of historical material allows the modernization programme to cover a wider portion of Pakistan’s documentary heritage and preserve records that exist in different physical and audiovisual formats.
The government is also establishing a dedicated Information Technology Wing at the National Archives of Pakistan to support the digital preservation process. The IT Wing is expected to play a role in managing archival data and supporting the technological infrastructure required for the continued digitization of historical material. The establishment of a specialised technology unit represents an important component of the broader modernization effort as the National Archives expands its use of digital systems.
The initiative is expected to improve access to historical material for researchers, policymakers and other users. Digitized records can be managed through digital platforms, potentially allowing users to access archival material more efficiently without depending entirely on physical documents. Greater digital availability can also make historically significant material easier to preserve and organise as the National Archives continues to build its digital collection.
Preserving archival material through digitization also addresses risks associated with aging and physical deterioration.
