HBL Achieves Major Tech Milestone with Successful Temenos Core Banking Go-Live

Habib Bank Limited (HBL), Pakistan’s largest financial institution, has reached a significant landmark in its digital transformation journey by successfully going live with the Temenos Core Banking system. This deployment represents one of the most ambitious and large-scale modernization programs in the region, aimed at replacing aging legacy infrastructure with a high-performance, cloud-native platform. The initial phase of this transition has already seen the successful migration of customer accounts from 200 branches across Pakistan, encompassing both Conventional and Islamic Banking services.

The implementation is a central component of HBL’s long-term strategy to build an agile, resilient, and scalable operational framework. Once the rollout is complete, the program will manage the bank’s entire branch network and over 40 million accounts. The sheer scale of the project is underscored by the system’s capacity to process approximately 20 million transactions per day, ensuring that HBL can meet the growing demands of its massive customer base with unprecedented speed and reliability.

This complex technical execution was delivered by Systems Limited, utilizing the Country Model Bank accelerator to tailor the global platform to local regulatory and operational requirements. The architecture is built on a hybrid-cloud environment powered by Red Hat OpenShift, integrating Temenos Core with the Temenos Data Hub. This modern setup allows the bank to leverage real-time data for advanced analytics and automated regulatory compliance, while also significantly shortening the time-to-market for new financial products.

Muhammad Nassir Salim, President and CEO of HBL, described the go-live as a pivotal moment for the bank’s technological evolution. He noted that the new system equips the institution to drive innovation and scalable efficiency, praising the collaboration between Temenos and Systems Limited in managing such a complex transition. By moving away from restrictive legacy systems, HBL is now better positioned to compete in an increasingly digital-centric financial landscape where speed and security are paramount.

The partnership also highlights the growing importance of cloud-native solutions in the banking sector. William Moroney, Chief Revenue Officer at Temenos, emphasized that the platform provides HBL with a robust foundation capable of supporting one of the largest banking operations in the world. Similarly, Ammara Masood, GM Global BFS at Systems Limited, pointed out that the success of this project reflects the ability to deliver multi-country banking modernization programs that align with strategic long-term goals.

As the migration continues across the rest of the HBL network, the bank is expected to see a marked improvement in operational efficiency and customer experience. The ability to process vast amounts of data in real-time will enable HBL to offer more personalized services and maintain its leadership position in the Pakistani market. This successful go-live sets a new benchmark for banking technology in South Asia, proving that even the largest traditional institutions can successfully transition to a modern, digital-first infrastructure.
