The ongoing transition toward a digitized and cashless national economy received a major boost as senior leaders from Mastercard and the Bank of Punjab convened in Karachi. The high-level meeting aimed to reaffirm and expand a long-standing strategic alliance designed to accelerate digital transaction adoption across the country. By combining international payment technology with one of the country’s most prominent banking networks, the collaboration plans to modernize transaction channels, improve public sector disbursements, and build a more inclusive financial ecosystem for millions of underserved citizens.
The visiting delegation from Mastercard was led by Ailish Campbell, Executive Vice President for the Public Sector, alongside Arslan Khan, the Country Manager for Pakistan, and Jibran Jamshad, Director of Business Development. On the host side, the Bank of Punjab team was headed by President and Chief Executive Officer Zafar Masud, accompanied by Chief Digital Officer Nofel Daud, Chief of Staff and Strategy Raza Bashir, Group Head of Treasury and Financial Institutions Qasim Nadeem, and Head of Cards Rai Usman. During the sessions, executive leaders evaluated current digital projects and charted a roadmap for expanding secure payment solutions across diverse sectors, including commercial retail, e-commerce, and public transport systems.
A key focal point of the discussions was the successful deployment of card-based products developed to support the provincial development goals of the Government of Punjab. The partnership has already enabled flagship initiatives such as the Chief Minister Punjab Asaan Karobar Card, the Chief Minister Punjab Kissan Card, and the Chief Minister Punjab Livestock Card. Issued by the bank and powered by global payment technology, these customized debit and credit products have successfully digitized the delivery of formal credit, subsidies, and essential supplies to local entrepreneurs, agricultural workers, and livestock owners. Additionally, the bank highlighted its execution of the Ramzan Nigehban Programme, which utilized technology-driven payment channels to distribute targeted financial assistance, significantly reducing leakages and operational inefficiencies associated with traditional paper currency distribution.
Looking toward future infrastructure upgrades, the two entities are actively collaborating on a massive transit digitization project designed to span thirteen major cities across Punjab. This ambitious urban mobility initiative will enable daily commuters to pay their transit fares seamlessly using contactless bank cards, bringing local public transport systems in line with international smart city standards. Furthermore, the meeting explored new mechanisms to streamline cross-border payments and inward remittances. By leveraging the global processing network of the international technology firm alongside the expanding international banking operations of the local bank, the institutions aim to deliver faster, safer, and cheaper remittance services to non-resident Pakistanis sending money back home.
Expressing his optimism about the deepened partnership, bank chief Zafar Masud emphasized that the collaborative efforts have already demonstrated the transformative power of digital payments in supporting public welfare, agricultural growth, and small business development. He noted that the next phase of their cooperation will concentrate on building modern payment infrastructure, optimizing international money transfer channels, and creating secure digital ecosystems that benefit both businesses and ordinary citizens.
Aligning with this vision, visiting executive Ailish Campbell stated that the country is demonstrating remarkable clarity and institutional strength in carving out the future of its digital payment architecture. She expressed pride in continuing the partnership, noting that combining secure international transaction technologies with strong public-private collaborations is essential to fostering a prosperous, resilient, and inclusive digital economy where all communities have the opportunity to thrive.
