The National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) has entered into a strategic partnership with ISTIQEME to deploy QR-based payment solutions, marking a significant step toward strengthening Pakistan’s digital payments ecosystem. The collaboration is aimed at accelerating the adoption of digital transactions across the country by improving infrastructure, expanding merchant onboarding, and supporting financial inclusion initiatives in alignment with national digital economy objectives.
The partnership brings together NBP’s extensive nationwide banking network and ISTIQEME’s expertise in digital enablement to build a more accessible and efficient digital payments framework. A key focus of the initiative is the deployment of merchant QR code-based payment systems, which are expected to simplify transactions for businesses and consumers while reducing reliance on cash-based payments.
Under the agreement, ISTIQEME will provide comprehensive operational support for the implementation of QR payment infrastructure across Pakistan. This includes assistance with account opening processes, merchant onboarding, and system deployment at scale. The company will also conduct structured training programs and awareness campaigns designed to encourage merchants to adopt and actively use digital payment solutions in their daily operations.
In addition to infrastructure deployment, ISTIQEME will work closely with NBP branches to streamline operational procedures. This includes ensuring efficient merchant registration, activation, and integration across multiple locations nationwide. The goal is to create a standardized onboarding process that enables faster adoption of QR-based payment systems among small, medium, and large-scale merchants.
The collaboration is designed to strengthen Pakistan’s broader digital financial ecosystem by combining banking infrastructure with fintech-driven innovation. By integrating ISTIQEME’s technological capabilities with NBP’s established presence across the country, the initiative aims to expand the reach of digital payment services into underserved and unbanked segments of the population.
Officials associated with the initiative have stated that the project aligns with ongoing efforts by the State Bank of Pakistan to promote financial inclusion and accelerate the transition toward a more cashless economy. The deployment of QR-based payment systems is expected to play a key role in reducing transaction friction, increasing transparency in payments, and improving access to formal financial services.
The partnership was formally announced during a ceremony held at NBP’s regional office in Karachi, which was attended by senior leadership from both organizations. The event marked the official launch of the collaboration and underscored the shared commitment of both entities to advancing digital transformation in Pakistan’s financial sector.
As digital payment adoption continues to grow globally, initiatives such as the NBP–ISTIQEME partnership are expected to contribute to Pakistan’s broader financial modernization agenda. By enabling scalable QR payment infrastructure and enhancing merchant participation, the collaboration aims to support long-term shifts toward digital financial systems and improved economic efficiency. Overall, the initiative reflects a broader movement within Pakistan’s banking and fintech sectors to strengthen digital infrastructure, expand financial access, and support the evolution of a more connected and cashless economy.
