Oil and Gas Development Company Limited has entered into a strategic partnership with French specialty chemicals company SNF to implement advanced Water Injection Systems at its Kunnar and Pasakhi oil fields located in Sindh. The collaboration marks a significant step in leveraging enhanced recovery technologies to strengthen Pakistan’s upstream energy output and improve long-term production sustainability.
The agreement, signed at OGDC’s headquarters in Islamabad, was attended by Minister for Energy (Petroleum Division) Ali Pervaiz Malik, OGDC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Ahmed Hayat Lak, and French Ambassador Nicolas Galey. The ceremony underscored the bilateral cooperation between Pakistan and France in the energy and industrial technology domains.
Under the partnership, SNF will deploy advanced water injection technology aimed at enhancing reservoir pressure and improving oil and gas recovery rates at the two fields. Water Injection Systems are widely used in mature reservoirs to maintain pressure levels, allowing hydrocarbons to flow more efficiently toward production wells. By adopting this system, OGDC expects to optimize resource extraction and extend the productive life of the Kunnar and Pasakhi assets.
The collaboration is projected to generate an additional $460 million in revenue, reflecting the anticipated increase in hydrocarbon output. According to project estimates, the initiative is expected to raise oil production by 9 million barrels and boost gas output by 3 billion cubic feet. The recovery factor of the fields is projected to increase by 8 to 10 percent, signaling a substantial improvement in extraction efficiency.
The project will be executed in three distinct phases. The first phase involves a nine-month installation and commissioning period during which the Water Injection Systems will be deployed and tested. This will be followed by two years of operational and maintenance support provided by SNF. During this period, SNF will also deliver technical training to OGDC personnel to ensure knowledge transfer and operational readiness. After completion of the support phase, the technology transfer to OGDC is expected, enabling the company to independently manage and sustain the system. The overall system is designed to operate for a 20-year lifespan.
Beyond production gains, the initiative carries environmental significance. The reinjection of treated produced water into the reservoirs reduces surface disposal requirements and aligns with sustainable industry practices. By reusing treated water in injection processes, the project supports environmental safety while enhancing reservoir management. This integrated approach reflects a broader industry shift toward balancing output maximization with ecological responsibility.
For OGDC, the adoption of advanced Water Injection Systems signals a move toward technology-driven optimization within Pakistan’s energy sector. As domestic energy demand continues to rise, improving recovery from existing fields presents a cost-effective alternative to new exploration campaigns. The partnership with SNF brings international expertise into Pakistan’s upstream operations, reinforcing the role of technical collaboration in modernizing the petroleum industry.
The agreement also highlights the importance of cross-border industrial partnerships in strengthening energy security and generating economic value. With an expected operational horizon of two decades, the project positions OGDC to achieve sustained production growth while embedding technical capacity within its workforce.
