Pakistan and Oman have reaffirmed their strategic commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, responding to the shifting geopolitical landscape of the region. This understanding was reached during a high-level meeting in Islamabad between Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik and the Omani Ambassador to Pakistan, Fahad bin Suleiman bin Khalaf Al Kharousi. The discussions centered on the urgent need to strengthen energy security and explore new avenues for collaboration as regional dynamics continue to evolve, impacting traditional supply chains.
Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik emphasized that the relationship between the two nations is built on a foundation of shared history, mutual respect, and deep-rooted people-to-people ties. He articulated Pakistan’s desire to elevate this partnership by fostering more robust linkages in the energy domain. A significant portion of the briefing focused on Pakistan’s ongoing strategy to diversify its energy imports to ensure a stable and uninterrupted supply for domestic consumers. Notably, the minister revealed that due to changing regional conditions, Pakistan is actively considering alternative energy routes and sources that extend beyond the Strait of Hormuz to mitigate potential maritime risks.
The Omani ambassador welcomed Pakistan’s proactive approach to energy diversification and reiterated Oman’s readiness to support its neighbor in achieving long-term energy stability. The dialogue touched upon Pakistan’s specific request for the priority provision of energy cargoes to meet the country’s growing domestic demand. Ambassador Al Kharousi responded favorably to the request, assuring the Pakistani leadership that the proposal would be reviewed with due consideration, reflecting the strong diplomatic rapport between the two capitals.
Operational data from March 2026 underscores the existing strength of this trade relationship. During the current month, Pakistan successfully imported three petrol cargoes and one diesel shipment from Omani ports, with two additional petrol cargoes expected to arrive before the month concludes. These shipments are critical for maintaining the country’s fuel reserves and supporting industrial activity. Furthermore, negotiations remain positive between Pakistan State Oil and Oman Trading International regarding the procurement of additional oil cargoes, signaling a steady increase in bilateral trade volumes.
Beyond immediate fuel supplies, the two officials explored long-term opportunities in the upstream sector, specifically targeting oil and gas exploration and production. By inviting Omani expertise and investment into Pakistan’s untapped reserves, the government hopes to reduce its reliance on imports over time. Both sides concluded the meeting by reaffirming their shared resolve to deepen strategic ties, ensuring that energy cooperation remains a cornerstone of the bilateral relationship for the mutual benefit of both nations.
