The electric fan industry in Pakistan is currently mobilizing to significantly scale the production of energy-efficient DC fans, a strategic move aimed at lowering domestic electricity consumption while aggressively expanding its export footprint across the Middle East and Africa. This industrial sector, primarily concentrated in the manufacturing hubs of Gujrat and Gujranwala, consists of approximately 300 manufacturers and serves as a vital pillar of the national economy. It provides direct employment to 40,000 individuals and supports over 150,000 indirect jobs, contributing substantially to industrial value addition. Industry leadership, including PEFMA Chairman Nabeel Ahmed Ilyas and Export Committee Chairman M. Azhar Aslam, has highlighted that the shift toward DC technology is essential for maintaining regional competitiveness and driving a digital transformation in appliance standards.
During a high-level virtual dialogue with Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb and Minister of State for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani, prominent industry figures including Yesir Ihsan of Pak Fans, Imad Rafiq of Royal Fans, and Faisal Afzal of Super Asia Group emphasized the sector’s growth prospects. The discussion centered on the necessity for increased access to financing to expand production capacities to meet the rising global demand for green and energy-saving appliances. While the government has established policy frameworks to support energy-efficient technologies, the industry noted that wider adoption requires a concerted effort to improve market awareness and foster better coordination with financial institutions. This push for modernization is seen as a key component of the broader economic ecosystem.
The Finance Minister stressed that addressing implementation gaps and facilitating direct investment in productive capacity are critical steps for strengthening the electrical appliances sector. A significant portion of the conversation focused on structural challenges that currently hinder the competitiveness of local manufacturers. Specifically, the industry flagged concerns regarding the availability and utilization of essential raw materials such as copper and aluminum. There is a growing trend of exporting these materials in their raw form, which limits the supply available for domestic value-added manufacturing. Industry representatives have called for a balanced regulatory approach that prioritizes local production requirements while still supporting the broader export agenda to ensure long-term sustainability.
Beyond raw materials, the meeting addressed several critical fiscal and operational matters, including SME liquidity, the timely processing of tax refunds, and the optimization of export facilitation mechanisms. The current tariff structures on imported inputs were also reviewed to identify areas where costs could be reduced to enhance the price competitiveness of Pakistani fans in international markets. Officials underscored that sustainable export growth is heavily dependent on achieving a larger scale of operations and ensuring policy consistency over the long term. Taxation, market access, and energy efficiency were identified as the primary factors that will define the future performance of the electrical appliances sector in a competitive global landscape.
The government has encouraged ongoing dialogue between industry stakeholders and relevant departments to develop practical, forward-looking proposals that can be integrated into the national economic plan. By scaling up the production of energy-efficient DC fans, Pakistan is positioned to become a key regional supplier of cost-effective, energy-saving solutions. This transition not only promises to boost foreign exchange earnings through exports but also serves the domestic interest by reducing the overall pressure on the national power grid. The coordinated effort involving the Finance Division and the Federal Board of Revenue reflects a unified state commitment to supporting value-added manufacturing and export-oriented industries during this period of economic recalibration. Scaling these technologies could eventually place Pakistan at the forefront of the regional energy-saving appliance market.
