PM Shehbaz Thanks President Trump for Acknowledging Pakistan’s Counter-Terrorism Efforts

March 5, 2025 — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed his gratitude to US President Donald Trump for recognizing Pakistan’s significant role in the arrest of the individual responsible for the deadly bombing that killed 13 US service members during the chaotic US withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.

In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Prime Minister Sharif acknowledged Pakistan’s ongoing efforts in counter-terrorism, emphasizing that the country has always played a pivotal role in denying safe havens to terrorist groups and militant organizations. His statement came in response to President Trump’s remarks during an address to Congress, where the US President highlighted the successful arrest of the terrorist responsible for the bombing.

The bombing, which occurred on August 26, 2021, took place as US troops were working to evacuate both Americans and Afghans from Kabul following the Taliban’s swift takeover of Afghanistan. The explosion, which occurred near the Kabul airport, was one of the most devastating attacks during the final stages of the US withdrawal. The attack not only resulted in the tragic loss of US military personnel but also intensified the sense of defeat and failure after two decades of American involvement in Afghanistan.

In the address to Congress, US Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed that the individual responsible for the bombing would be transferred to US custody through coordination between the US Justice Department, FBI, and CIA. However, the identity of the individual was not disclosed further.

In his response, Prime Minister Sharif emphasized Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to counter-terrorism efforts and its resolute stance against extremism in all its forms. He reiterated that Pakistan had made tremendous sacrifices in the fight against terrorism, including the loss of over 80,000 of its soldiers and civilians. Despite the immense human cost, Sharif underscored that the country’s leadership and people remain steadfast in their determination to rid Pakistan of terrorism.

The Prime Minister’s remarks reflect Pakistan’s long-standing role in regional security and counter-terrorism initiatives, often working behind the scenes to thwart the activities of militant groups. Pakistan has collaborated with international partners, including the United States, in intelligence-sharing and military operations aimed at combating terrorism in the region.

Sharif also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to continuing its partnership with the United States to ensure peace and stability in the region. He emphasized that the country would remain a reliable ally in the global fight against terrorism, acknowledging the importance of such partnerships in securing regional and international security.

This acknowledgment by President Trump and the subsequent statements from Prime Minister Sharif reflect the complex and ongoing relationship between Pakistan and the United States, especially concerning shared counter-terrorism goals. Pakistan’s active participation in the arrest, as well as its broader efforts to combat terrorism, underscores the country’s critical role in global peace and security initiatives.

The continued collaboration between Pakistan and the United States is seen as essential in maintaining regional stability and addressing the long-standing issues of extremism that have plagued South Asia for decades. Both nations are expected to continue their joint efforts to promote peace, with Pakistan playing a crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of the region moving forward.
