LISBON, Portugal – In a historic and solemn moment, Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan V has been named the 50th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. This announcement follows the unsealing of the will of his late father, Prince Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV, who passed away in Lisbon at the age of 88 on Wednesday.
Prince Rahim’s ascension to the position of Imam marks a significant chapter in the history of the Ismaili community. As the new Imam, he inherits a lineage that traces back to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) through his daughter, Hazrat Bibi Fatima, and her husband, Hazrat Ali, who is considered the first Shia Imam and the fourth Rightly Guided Caliph of Islam. This deep-rooted heritage connects Prince Rahim to the revered figures of early Islamic history.
The Aga Khan family, through its hereditary line of Imams, has provided spiritual guidance to the Ismaili Muslims for over 1,400 years. This lineage of leadership has been integral to the Ismaili community’s evolution, serving as a beacon of spiritual enlightenment and social welfare. The Ismailis, who are spread across more than 35 countries, number approximately 12 to 15 million people worldwide.
As the 50th Imam, Prince Rahim Aga Khan V assumes a role that extends beyond the spiritual and religious domains. Historically, the Imam of the Ismailis has not only been a religious leader but also a symbol of the community’s resilience, unity, and progress. The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a global network of institutions founded by the Imam, has been instrumental in addressing challenges across sectors such as education, healthcare, cultural preservation, and economic development.
Prince Rahim’s appointment as Imam of the Ismaili Muslims comes at a time when the community faces both challenges and opportunities. His father, the late Aga Khan IV, was widely respected for his vision and the growth of the AKDN, which is renowned for its philanthropic and development work around the world. Under his leadership, the Ismaili community saw advances in various fields, including the enhancement of educational opportunities, healthcare facilities, and the promotion of cultural diversity.
As the new Imam, Prince Rahim Aga Khan V carries forward this legacy. His leadership will be pivotal in continuing the community’s progress while maintaining its core values of compassion, tolerance, and service to humanity. His responsibilities as Imam include providing spiritual guidance to Ismailis, facilitating their religious observances, and ensuring the community’s well-being and continued development in an ever-changing world.
The Ismaili community, under Prince Rahim’s leadership, can expect a continued commitment to fostering a better future while holding fast to its traditions and values. The transition of leadership is not only a momentous occasion for the Ismailis but also serves as a reminder of the important role of spiritual leadership in shaping the future of communities.
As the Ismaili Muslims move forward under the guidance of their new Imam, the legacy of the Aga Khan family remains firmly entrenched, and their commitment to enhancing the lives of millions worldwide is set to continue with even greater resolve.
