SBP Governor Projects Foreign Exchange Reserves to Reach Three-Month Import Cover Milestone

9 Views by webdesk

The national economy is positioned to achieve the critical international standard of three months of total import coverage in the upcoming months as foreign exchange inflows continue to strengthen the state balance sheet. State Bank of Pakistan Governor Jameel Ahmed detailed this optimistic financial trajectory during a comprehensive analytical briefing session conducted immediately following the latest monetary policy committee announcement. The central bank leadership projected that the official national liquid reserves are on track to climb to approximately eighteen billion dollars by the close of June, a milestone that effectively translates into roughly two point seven months of continuous import protection. This impending accumulation of external capital is expected to provide a substantial buffer for the domestic market, with additional structural improvements anticipated shortly thereafter to push past the vital three-month global security threshold.

According to the official central bank assessment, the country’s external accounts maintain a broadly stable trajectory with zero major adverse shocks recorded across foreign payments during recent trading quarters. National export performance metrics and regular commercial inflows are moving entirely in line with targeted state projections, while inbound transfers through the specialized Roshan Digital Account framework continue to offer essential support for external financing requirements. Addressing the complex issue of sovereign debt servicing, the central bank governor confirmed that the state has successfully settled a massive twenty-five point five billion dollars in total repayable external obligations. Looking at the immediate schedule, approximately seven hundred million dollars is slated for formal repayment over the course of the next three months, while all necessary debt rollover and financial refinancing agreements are organized for completion before the end of June.

On the national fiscal front, the central bank chief highlighted that the federal administration has successfully recorded a positive primary surplus, describing the general budgetary position as structurally balanced and disciplined. This visible fiscal prudence is carefully synchronized with tightening monetary policies enforced under the parameters of the active International Monetary Fund stabilization program. Despite these stabilizing macroeconomic indicators, the banking regulator expressed caution regarding consumer price indices, warning that core inflation is expected to remain elevated in the double-digit range across the near-term horizon. Furthermore, the governor noted that the newly announced federal budget maintains a heavy strategic focus on domestic industrial development, and the long-term implications of these fiscal policies are currently being integrated into the central bank’s broader macroeconomic models. To reflect these evolving dynamics, updated financial projections for the 2027 fiscal year will be formally tabled during the next monetary policy committee session, alongside the publication of the official upcoming policy calendar by the end of June.
