A delegation from the Ministry of Planning and Development, led by Engineer Amir Zameer Ahmed Khan, visited the head office of Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) in Peshawar to review the progress of various development projects being implemented with support from the World Bank. The delegation held discussions with PESCO management and senior officials regarding the status of the projects, their implementation stages and measures being taken to improve the company’s power transmission system. The visit focused on assessing progress against project targets and reviewing the steps required for timely completion.
PESCO Chief Executive Officer Akhtar Hameed Khan and senior officers received the Ministry of Planning and Development delegation at the company’s head office. During the visit, Chief Engineer of the Project Management Unit (PMU) Habib-ur-Rehman Marwat provided a detailed briefing on the development projects supported by the World Bank. The briefing covered the current progress of the projects, construction stages, established targets and measures being undertaken to strengthen the power transmission network operated by PESCO.
According to the briefing, the World Bank supported projects are aimed at strengthening PESCO’s transmission network and increasing its capacity. The projects are also intended to contribute to improvements in the reliability of electricity supplied to consumers. The development work is focused on upgrading the infrastructure required to support the power distribution system and improve its ability to meet electricity requirements. The projects form part of efforts to improve the overall performance of the electricity infrastructure in the areas served by PESCO.
The delegation reviewed the implementation status of the projects and discussed the progress achieved across different construction stages. Officials examined the targets associated with the development work and the measures being taken by PESCO to maintain progress. The review provided an opportunity for the Ministry of Planning and Development representatives to receive updates directly from the company’s management and project officials regarding implementation and the condition of the relevant transmission infrastructure.
The World Bank supported initiatives are expected to strengthen the capacity of PESCO’s transmission network while supporting a more reliable electricity supply for consumers. Improvements in transmission infrastructure are important for the efficient movement of electricity through the power system and for addressing infrastructure requirements as electricity demand changes. The projects therefore focus not only on construction activities but also on improving the capacity and reliability of the network serving PESCO’s consumers.
During the visit, the delegation expressed satisfaction with the progress of the projects. At the same time, it stressed the importance of effective monitoring to ensure that implementation remains aligned with the approved targets and timelines. The delegation also emphasised the need for timely completion of the development work so that the intended improvements to the transmission network can be delivered within the planned framework.
PESCO officials briefed the delegation on the measures being adopted to improve the power transmission system and maintain progress on the World Bank supported initiatives. The discussions covered project implementation, construction stages and the targets established for the development work. The engagement between the Ministry of Planning and Development and PESCO provided an assessment of the ongoing activities and highlighted the importance of continued oversight during the remaining stages of implementation.
The visit comes as PESCO continues work on projects designed to improve its power infrastructure and strengthen transmission capacity. With World Bank support, the development initiatives are intended to improve the network and provide consumers with more dependable electricity. The Ministry of Planning and Development’s review emphasised continued monitoring and timely execution as key requirements for completing the projects and achieving their planned objectives.
