Energy Minister Reaffirms State Commitment to Reko Diq Mining Project Success

The Government of Pakistan has reiterated its unwavering resolve to ensure the successful execution of the Reko Diq project, one of the world’s largest undeveloped copper and gold deposits. During a session of the National Assembly on Monday, Minister for Energy Ali Pervaiz Malik addressed the house, emphasizing that the multi-billion dollar mining initiative continues to enjoy full support from all primary stakeholders. The minister’s statement comes as a reassurance to both domestic observers and international investors regarding the stability and progress of this landmark project located in the Chagai district of Balochistan.

In a significant update regarding the financial closure of the venture, Malik informed the assembly that all vital approvals for project financing have been secured from the relevant lenders and sponsors. This milestone paves the way for the substantial capital injection required to transition the site from a planned initiative to an active mining operation. The minister noted that the financial architecture is now firmly in place, reflecting the confidence that international financial institutions have in the project’s feasibility and the sovereign guarantees provided by the state.

The role of the international partner, Barrick Gold Corporation, remains central to the project’s momentum. The Energy Minister highlighted that the corporation has consistently reaffirmed its dedication to the venture across various global and local platforms. To further solidify this partnership, the chairman of Barrick Gold recently concluded a visit to Pakistan. During this trip, high-level discussions were held to iron out minor outstanding technical and administrative matters, ensuring that the project operator and the government are perfectly synchronized in their operational goals.

Malik further elaborated that the tripartite commitment between Barrick Gold, the Federal Government of Pakistan, and the Government of Balochistan is stronger than ever. Coordination among the technical and administrative teams of these entities is a continuous process, with various work streams under the comprehensive development plan progressing according to the established timelines. This collaborative spirit is intended to ensure that the project not only meets its industrial targets but also contributes to the socio-economic uplift of the local communities in Balochistan.

Addressing concerns over transparency and the protection of national interests, the minister shed light on the robust governance structure embedded within the Reko Diq Joint Venture Agreement. He explained that a comprehensive oversight framework has been implemented to safeguard the interests of the involved state-owned enterprises and the provincial government. This system facilitates engagement at the committee level and ensures regular board interactions with the project operator, ensuring that every step taken is in accordance with agreed-upon governance protocols.

As the project moves forward, the focus remains on adhering to international mining standards while maintaining a transparent and accountable management style. The minister’s briefing suggests that the Reko Diq initiative is no longer just a prospect but a maturing asset that is being managed through a sophisticated administrative lens. With the financing secured and the stakeholders in alignment, the government views Reko Diq as a cornerstone of its strategy to revitalize the national economy through the optimized utilization of its vast mineral wealth.
