Pakistan External Account Navigates Rising Trade Deficit Balanced by Robust Remittances and Tech Exports

2 Views by webdesk

The national external account experienced a notable shift during the first ten months of the 2026 fiscal year, recording a collective current account deficit of 252 million dollars. This stands in contrast to the substantial surplus of 1,662 million dollars achieved during the identical timeframe of the previous fiscal period. The transition from a positive surplus to a mild deficit was highlighted by a monthly current account deficit of 324 million dollars during April, signaling a clear resurgence in domestic inbound demand for manufacturing components and global energy commodities.

Total inbound shipments of goods and services expanded to 63.1 billion dollars during the July to April stretch, moving up from the 58.1 billion dollars documented last year. This uptick in purchasing reflects a broader domestic economic recovery, requiring industrial plants to source heavier quantities of overseas materials. On the outbound front, collective exports of goods and services stabilized at 34.1 billion dollars, remaining close to the 34.3 billion dollars recorded during the prior year, with standalone physical product shipments anchoring the trade numbers at 25.8 billion dollars.

A deep dive into the service export category reveals that the digital economy has emerged as a crucial growth driver for the country’s external balance sheet. Shipments of information technology services surged by an impressive 21.1 percent during the ten month review period, reaching an absolute value of 3.8 billion dollars. This technology driven acceleration has provided the national treasury with a highly resilient revenue stream, helping offset conventional export challenges and demonstrating the expanding footprint of local technology startups and corporate software development houses in international markets.

Conversely, the mismatch between broad scale import acceleration and steady export levels caused the combined goods and services trade deficit to widen to 29.0 billion dollars, up from 23.8 billion dollars during the previous fiscal year. Official trade data indicates that despite the widening gap, certain primary export items posted positive volume gains, specifically raw cotton, knitwear manufacturing, readymade garments, and bedwear products. On the import side, the most substantial budget increases were driven by elevated volumes of petroleum crude, global palm oil shipments, and specialized industrial machinery.

Providing a massive financial cushion to the external account, total worker remittances sent home by overseas citizens rose by 8.5 percent to hit 33.9 billion dollars during the July to April stretch. Financial inflows originating from geographic corridors like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates maintained their traditional dominance. Meanwhile, net foreign direct investment stood at 1.4 billion dollars, with capital primarily flowing from corporate entities in China and Hong Kong. However, the portfolio investment category faced headwinds, recording net capital outflows of 1.38 billion dollars across public and private securities.

Despite these shifting dynamics, the national liquid foreign exchange reserves maintained a steady position, standing at 22.6 billion dollars as of May 22, 2026, with the State Bank of Pakistan holding a commanding share of 17.1 billion dollars. While the substantial inflows from international remittances and expanding information technology services continue to offer reliable baseline support to the currency, volatile global crude oil prices persist as the primary external sector risk capable of impacting future balance of payments projections.
