Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Reviews Rs204 Billion Approved Under PM Apna Ghar Housing Scheme

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was briefed during a high-level review meeting in Islamabad that commercial banks across Pakistan have sanctioned 204 billion rupees in housing finance under the Prime Minister Apna Ghar Scheme. Out of the total approved capital, financial institutions have successfully disbursed 27 billion rupees directly to eligible applicants. The detailed briefing was presented as part of a comprehensive performance assessment convened by the prime minister to evaluate execution milestones, institutional coordination, and loan distribution progress for the national social housing program.

Addressing the session, Prime Minister Sharif reaffirmed that the Apna Ghar initiative was conceptualized specifically to support low- and middle-income segments of society in achieving homeownership. He emphasized that delivering affordable and dignified housing to ordinary citizens remains among the federal government’s highest social and economic priorities. The prime minister noted that expanding access to mortgage financing serves a vital dual purpose by providing essential shelter to disadvantaged families while simultaneously stimulating domestic economic activity across allied construction, building materials, and manufacturing industries.

To maintain steady momentum and resolve implementation hurdles, the meeting was informed that the Ministry of Housing and Works and the State Bank of Pakistan regularly conduct joint weekly review sessions. These scheduled assessments closely monitor bank-wise loan processing metrics, identify operational bottlenecks, and streamline loan processing mechanisms to ensure that deserving families receive timely financial facilitation. Directing relevant authorities to further accelerate work on the scheme, the prime minister called upon both public sector lenders and private commercial banks to significantly enhance their financing support. He urged financial institutions to expand their mortgage lending portfolios to widen access for citizens seeking housing loans under the subsidized federal program.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Sharif issued explicit instructions for authorities to formulate a comprehensive long-term strategy encompassing both vertical high-rise developments and horizontal housing projects. He stressed the necessity of adopting practical, sustainable urban planning solutions capable of accommodating the residential demands of the country’s rapidly growing population while conserving agricultural land.

Closing the meeting, the prime minister reiterated the government’s firm commitment to facilitating underprivileged and middle-class households, adding that seamless coordination among all participating institutions remains essential for the timely execution and overall success of the housing initiative. The high-level review session was attended by Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Muhammad Aurangzeb, Federal Minister for Housing and Works Riaz Pirzada, Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Kayani, alongside senior federal officers and central bank representatives.
