United Bank Limited has announced a major equity investment of 22 billion rupees into Khushhali Microfinance Bank Limited, marking one of the largest single capital injections in the history of Pakistan’s microfinance sector. The substantial equity support is designed to reinforce Khushhali Microfinance Bank’s balance sheet, rebuild its capital adequacy ratio, and restore operational momentum following prolonged capital constraints. The investment commitment forms part of a broader 40 billion rupee capital allocation strategy approved by United Bank Limited to support key national economic priorities, which also includes dedicated funding for a new agricultural finance subsidiary aimed at boosting rural credit channels.
Khushhali Microfinance Bank was established in 2000 as part of a landmark federal initiative to pioneer organized microfinance services in Pakistan. Over the past two decades, the institution expanded into the country’s largest microfinance bank, establishing an extensive physical footprint of over 200 branches operating across urban, semi-urban, and rural areas. As a major provider of microcredit, the bank held a significant market share in gross loan portfolios, serving millions of low-income borrowers, micro-entrepreneurs, smallholder farmers, and female business owners who previously lacked access to formal commercial banking channels.
However, the microfinance institution faced severe operational and financial headwinds in recent years due to macroeconomic shocks, catastrophic flooding in agricultural regions, and widespread loan restructuring. The accumulation of non-performing loans and heavy provisioning requirements significantly eroded the bank’s core equity base, pushing its capital adequacy ratio below the mandatory regulatory thresholds set by the central bank. These capital shortfalls restricted the bank’s capacity to extend new loans and trigger regulatory lock-in clauses on debt instruments, making fresh equity support from primary sponsors an urgent necessity to safeguard the institution’s long-term continuity.
As a long-standing sponsor holding an existing equity stake in Khushhali Microfinance Bank, United Bank Limited stepped in to provide the required recapitalization. The 22 billion rupee capital contribution effectively resolves the bank’s capital shortfall, absorbs historical loan losses, and aligns its balance sheet with the State Bank of Pakistan’s stringent prudential standards for microfinance institutions. By restoring financial stability, the equity injection guarantees that Khushhali Microfinance Bank can resume normal lending operations and scale up its credit delivery to priority sectors.
The transaction carries strategic significance for Pakistan’s broader financial landscape, reinforcing consumer and depositor confidence across the microfinance industry. With renewed capital strength, Khushhali Microfinance Bank plans to accelerate its digital financial transformation, streamline credit distribution for small businesses, and launch specialized financing schemes tailored for small agriculture and women entrepreneurs. Expanding microcredit access remains crucial for national poverty alleviation, job creation, and economic formalization, particularly as small and medium enterprises continue to drive domestic commercial activity. The proposed equity investment remains subject to formal work-in-progress approvals from relevant regulatory bodies, including the State Bank of Pakistan and the Competition Commission of Pakistan. United Bank Limited’s ability to execute this landmark recapitalization stems from its robust financial performance, underpinned by strong balance sheet growth and a 33 percent increase in first-half net profit to 85.91 billion rupees in 2026. Once regulatory clearances are fully finalized, the capital transfer will proceed, securing the future of Pakistan’s largest microfinance institution and reinforcing institutional commitment to sustainable financial inclusion.
