A high-level Qatari delegation has expressed interest in exploring investment opportunities in Pakistan as Islamabad and Doha discussed ways to expand bilateral trade, investment and cooperation across several key sectors. The discussions took place during a meeting between Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani and a Qatari delegation led by Sheikh Nayef bin Eid Al Thani, a prominent businessman and senior member of the Royal Family of Qatar, in Islamabad. The meeting focused on strengthening the longstanding relationship between the two countries while identifying areas where greater economic engagement could produce opportunities for businesses and investors on both sides.
During the meeting, Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani highlighted the longstanding relationship between Pakistan and Qatar, describing the bilateral partnership as one rooted in shared history, culture, faith and mutually beneficial economic connections. He called for stronger economic engagement between the two countries and encouraged Qatari investors to examine opportunities available in Pakistan. Tourism, agriculture and energy were identified among the areas where increased investment and cooperation could contribute to expanding economic ties, alongside other sectors of mutual interest.
The Chairman Senate emphasized that Pakistan offers opportunities for foreign investors across a range of economic activities and invited the Qatari delegation to consider the country as a destination for investment. Greater participation by Qatari investors could support the development of sectors such as tourism and agriculture while also contributing to energy related projects. The discussions reflected an effort to move bilateral relations beyond traditional diplomatic engagement and place greater emphasis on commercial partnerships, investment and private sector cooperation.
The Qatari delegation responded positively to the investment opportunities discussed during the meeting. Sheikh Nayef bin Eid Al Thani expressed keen interest in exploring potential investment opportunities in Pakistan and stressed the importance of expanding cooperation through trade and investment. His remarks indicated an interest in strengthening economic links between the two countries and identifying practical avenues through which businesses and investors can increase their engagement.
Tourism was among the areas highlighted during the discussions. Pakistan has a range of destinations and tourism related opportunities that could attract international investment in hospitality, infrastructure and related services. Greater participation by international investors could support the development of tourism facilities while strengthening connections between Pakistan and markets in the Gulf region. Qatar’s interest in expanding economic cooperation therefore provides an opportunity to examine investment possibilities across tourism and associated sectors.
Agriculture was another area identified for potential collaboration. Pakistan’s large agricultural base provides opportunities for investment in production, processing, storage, supply chains and related activities. Greater foreign participation in these areas could help develop commercial links between producers and international markets while supporting the expansion of agricultural businesses. The discussions between the Pakistani and Qatari sides highlighted agriculture as one of the sectors where future cooperation could be explored.
Energy also featured prominently in the proposed areas of economic cooperation. Pakistan’s energy requirements and the importance of strengthening energy infrastructure create opportunities for international investment across different parts of the sector. Qatar, as a major energy producing country, has significant experience in the energy industry, making the sector an important area for continued bilateral discussions and potential commercial engagement.
Gilani also briefed the Qatari delegation about his initiative for the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference, held under the theme “Peace, Security and Development.” He appreciated Qatar’s participation in the forum and highlighted the importance of international and regional dialogue. The discussion reflected Pakistan’s broader emphasis on cooperation and dialogue as tools for addressing regional and international challenges.
The Chairman Senate also emphasized the significance of the Makkah Accord in promoting unity, peace and stability among Muslim countries. Sheikh Nayef bin Eid Al Thani appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to promote peace, dialogue, development and regional cooperation. He expressed hope that the Makkah Accord would contribute to greater stability, security and unity across the Muslim world, adding a regional dimension to the discussions between the two sides.
The Qatari delegation also highlighted the importance of facilitating the Pakistani diaspora living in Qatar. Pakistanis residing in Qatar represent an important people to people connection between the two countries, while their contribution to economic and social ties remains significant. Discussions around the diaspora formed another part of the broader engagement during the meeting and highlighted the importance of ensuring that bilateral relations also support the interests of citizens living and working across both countries.
Advisor to Chairman Senate and Ambassador of the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference, Ms. Misbah Khar, also attended the meeting. Her participation reflected the wider institutional engagement accompanying discussions on bilateral relations, regional cooperation and parliamentary diplomacy.
The expression of interest from the Qatari delegation provides an opportunity for Pakistan to further promote its investment potential among Gulf based investors. Continued engagement will be important for translating initial interest into concrete investment projects, particularly in tourism, agriculture, energy and other sectors identified as areas of mutual interest. Stronger trade and investment links could also provide a broader foundation for the economic relationship between Pakistan and Qatar.
The meeting ultimately reinforced the two countries’ intention to strengthen bilateral cooperation through greater economic engagement, while also maintaining dialogue on regional peace and stability. With the Qatari delegation showing interest in investment opportunities and Pakistan actively encouraging greater foreign participation, future discussions are expected to focus on identifying viable projects and strengthening commercial connections between businesses in the two countries.
