Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has appointed aviation executive Adrian Hamilton-Manns as its new chief executive officer, with the airline confirming that he assumed charge on Monday, November 2, 2026. The appointment marks a new leadership phase for the national carrier as it continues efforts to improve its commercial performance, strengthen operational efficiency and advance its wider transformation under private-sector management.
The appointment was announced by the PIA Board, which said Hamilton-Manns would lead the airline through its ongoing restructuring and efforts to establish long-term commercial viability. He brings more than 30 years of experience in the international aviation industry and has previously served as chief executive of three airlines. His professional background includes airline leadership, commercial management and turnaround strategies, experience that the board expects will support PIA’s strategic objectives.
Before joining PIA, Hamilton-Manns served as chief executive of Oman-based SalamAir. The airline operates in the low-cost aviation segment and was his most recent leadership assignment before taking charge of Pakistan’s national carrier. His appointment follows several senior positions across different aviation markets, giving him experience in managing airlines with varying business models and operating environments.
Hamilton-Manns previously served as president and chief executive officer of Kazakhstan’s FlyArystan from April 2020 to July 2024. He was also the founding chief executive of flyafrica.com, an Africa-focused low-cost airline, where he served from 2012 to 2016. These roles added to his experience in developing and managing airline operations in competitive markets, particularly in the low-cost aviation sector.
His earlier career also includes senior commercial positions at several international airlines. These include India’s IndiGo, South African Airways, Virgin Australia’s Pacific Blue and Indonesia’s Mandala Airlines. He began his aviation career at Air New Zealand in 1997, establishing a professional background that spans airline operations and commercial management across multiple regions.
Hamilton-Manns takes over the chief executive position from Air Vice Marshal Amir Hayat, who led PIA for approximately four-and-a-half years. During his tenure, Hayat oversaw a period in which the airline introduced structural reforms, worked to improve operational efficiency and prepared for the privatisation process. The PIA Board acknowledged his contribution to the national carrier and recognised the challenges involved in managing the airline during a complex transitional period.
The chairman of the PIA Board expressed appreciation for Hayat’s commitment, saying the former chief executive had played a role in supporting the airline through a difficult phase. The board also welcomed Hamilton-Manns and expressed confidence that his international aviation experience would help move the carrier’s strategic priorities forward. These priorities include improving service standards, strengthening the airline’s commercial position and working towards sustainable profitability.
The leadership change comes as PIA enters a new phase following the transfer of its management to an Arif Habib-led consortium on June 29, 2026, after the privatisation process. The move placed the airline under private-sector management as part of efforts to address longstanding financial and operational challenges. Hamilton-Manns’ appointment is part of this transition, with the new management structure expected to focus on the airline’s business performance and future direction.
PIA has faced challenges involving operational performance, financial sustainability and competition in the aviation industry. Improving commercial viability requires attention to operating costs, route performance, customer service and the airline’s ability to compete for passengers in domestic and international markets. The board’s announcement places particular emphasis on transformation and turnaround experience, although it has not detailed specific targets or a timetable for the new chief executive’s plans.
Hamilton-Manns’ experience at SalamAir, FlyArystan and flyafrica.com provides a background in airline leadership, including exposure to low-cost business models. His previous commercial roles at IndiGo and other international carriers also bring experience from different aviation markets. How this experience will translate into changes at PIA will become clearer as the new chief executive begins implementing the airline’s strategic priorities.
The appointment is therefore an important management development for the national carrier as it moves further into its private-sector-led phase. With the PIA Board identifying service improvements, operational transformation and sustainable profitability as key objectives, Hamilton-Manns will be responsible for leading the airline through its next stage of change. The transition also follows Hayat’s four-and-a-half-year tenure, during which the airline undertook reforms and preparations for privatisation.
