HBL has become the first commercial bank in Pakistan to introduce real-time Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) trading account opening through its HBL Mobile App, creating a direct digital link between everyday banking services and the country’s capital markets. The initiative has been launched in partnership with AKD Securities Limited, with support from the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and the National Clearing Company of Pakistan Limited (NCCPL). Through this facility, HBL customers can open trading accounts within minutes using the mobile application, without completing traditional paperwork or visiting a bank branch.
The development marks a new step in the integration of digital banking and investment services in Pakistan. By making access to the stock market available through an existing banking application, HBL is seeking to simplify the process for customers interested in investing in listed companies. Previously, prospective investors generally had to follow separate procedures to establish banking and brokerage relationships. The new arrangement brings the account-opening process closer to customers by allowing them to initiate their entry into the capital market through a digital channel they already use for financial transactions.
Under the partnership, AKD Securities provides the brokerage connection, while the involvement of SECP and NCCPL supports the broader institutional framework required for access to Pakistan’s regulated capital market. The collaboration brings together a commercial bank, a securities brokerage firm, the market regulator and the clearing and settlement institution. Their combined participation reflects the role of cooperation between financial institutions and market infrastructure organisations in making investment services more accessible through technology.
The ability to open a trading account within minutes through the HBL Mobile App is intended to reduce procedural barriers that may discourage potential investors. Removing the need for physical paperwork and branch visits can make the initial account-opening experience more convenient, particularly for customers who prefer managing their financial activities digitally. It also connects the banking relationship with an additional financial service, allowing customers to explore capital market participation without beginning the process through a separate physical channel.
The launch was marked at an event attended by senior representatives from the participating organisations. Muhammad Nassir Salim, President and Chief Executive Officer of HBL, was present alongside Aqeel Karim Dhedhi, Chairman of AKD Group, and Hina Dhedi Junaid, Chairperson of AKD Securities. Naveed Qazi, Chief Executive Officer of NCCPL, also attended the event, together with senior leadership from HBL, AKD Securities and NCCPL.
The participation of these executives highlighted the institutional collaboration behind the initiative. HBL brings its digital banking platform and customer network to the arrangement, while AKD Securities connects customers with brokerage services. SECP and NCCPL provide support from the regulatory and market infrastructure sides, making the partnership an example of how different parts of the financial system can work together to improve access to investment opportunities.
The initiative also comes at a time when digital channels are becoming increasingly important to the delivery of financial services. Mobile banking applications are expanding beyond conventional functions such as fund transfers, bill payments and account management. Their integration with investment services can give customers access to a wider range of financial activities through a single digital interface. For banks, such partnerships also create opportunities to connect customers with services offered by other regulated financial institutions.
For Pakistan’s capital market, easier account opening could help reduce one of the initial hurdles faced by people considering stock market investment. A simpler digital onboarding process may encourage more bank customers to explore investment options, although broader participation will also depend on financial awareness, investor confidence and understanding of market risks. Access through a mobile application does not remove the need for investors to make informed decisions, but it can make the first step towards participation more convenient.
HBL’s collaboration with AKD Securities, SECP and NCCPL therefore represents a notable development in the connection between commercial banking and Pakistan’s capital market. By enabling real-time PSX trading account opening through its mobile application, the bank is introducing a digital route for customers to move from banking services towards securities investment. The launch places greater emphasis on integrated financial services and could provide a model for further cooperation between banks and capital market institutions.
