Bank Alfalah and Legal Aid Society Launch “ADAL” Initiative to Empower Communities Through Financial and Legal Literacy

Bank Alfalah has partnered with the Legal Aid Society (LAS) to launch “ADAL – Justice with Dignity, Awareness, and Empowerment,” a comprehensive initiative aimed at promoting access to justice and advancing financial literacy among Pakistan’s marginalized communities. The one-year project seeks to empower 2,000 individuals across Karachi by providing education, legal awareness, and direct assistance, marking a powerful step toward social inclusion and community empowerment.

The ADAL project, supported by a PKR 6 million donation from Bank Alfalah, represents the Bank’s deepening commitment to corporate social responsibility and its mission to foster a fair and inclusive society. The initiative focuses on strengthening the link between financial empowerment and access to justice—two fundamental areas often overlooked among underprivileged populations.

Led and implemented by the Legal Aid Society, one of Pakistan’s leading justice-sector organizations, the ADAL program will operate across low-income neighborhoods of Karachi. Through structured training sessions, awareness drives, and community engagements, LAS aims to build knowledge among those who are typically excluded from formal financial systems and legal protection frameworks.

Over the next twelve months, trained paralegals from LAS will conduct 100 awareness sessions across target communities. These sessions will help participants understand their basic legal rights, navigate bureaucratic procedures, and manage their personal finances more effectively. The project’s special emphasis on women and minority groups underlines its mission to reduce inequalities and ensure that vulnerable segments of society can make informed decisions that impact their lives.

“This engagement with the Legal Aid Society is a meaningful measure towards building a more equitable and just Pakistan,” said Mian Ejaz Ahmad, Company Secretary and Group Head, Legal & Corporate Affairs at Bank Alfalah. “The ADAL project aligns closely with our mission to empower communities and reduce systemic inequalities. We are proud to support an organization that has consistently stood by those most in need of professional support in the protection of their rights.”

Barrister Haya Emaan Zahid, CEO of the Legal Aid Society, shared her perspective on the broader purpose of the initiative, noting that justice must extend beyond courtroom walls. “Justice is not an abstract idea. It shapes every aspect of a person’s life—their health, education, and livelihood. Through ADAL, we aim to make justice tangible, rooted in dignity, and accessible to those who need it the most,” she said.

In addition to its educational focus, ADAL will also provide pro bono legal representation to women facing legal challenges, offering direct assistance to those who lack financial means to seek counsel. This intervention aims to help women assert their rights, protect their livelihoods, and gain confidence in navigating legal systems.

The ADAL initiative is closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities). By integrating these global objectives into local action, Bank Alfalah and LAS are setting a precedent for meaningful collaboration between the private sector and civil society.

Scheduled to span an entire year, the project includes regular monitoring and progress evaluations to ensure transparency and measurable impact. It reflects how financial institutions can play an instrumental role in strengthening community resilience, improving access to justice, and promoting a more equitable society through sustainable partnerships.

The launch of ADAL stands as a testament to the potential of cross-sector collaboration in driving real change—where financial inclusion meets social justice, and empowerment becomes a shared goal.
