Karachi’s AI‑Driven E‑Challan System Issues Nearly Rs 570 Million in Fines for Seat‑Belt Violations

Karachi’s ambitious e‑challan system, integrated with the city’s Safe City camera network, has now recorded more than 93,000 traffic violations since its launch. The automated system monitors key intersections and arterial roads, identifying infractions ranging from failure to wear seat belts to wrong‑way driving, issuing fines without human intervention.

Seat‑belt violations remain the most common offence, with 57,541 drivers penalised to date. Motorcyclists are also heavily represented in the violation statistics, as 22,227 riders have been fined for not wearing helmets, underscoring a persistent disregard for basic road safety measures.

Speeding continues to be a challenge for traffic authorities. The system recorded 1,188 violations among heavy vehicles such as dumpers, trailers, and water tankers, while 2,699 other vehicles were caught exceeding speed limits. Red-light offences were also significant, with cameras capturing 3,102 instances of signal violations. Additional common infractions included 611 stop-line violations and 426 cases of wrong-way driving.

The e‑challan system also targets cosmetic or regulatory violations. A total of 1,278 vehicles were flagged for non-standard or “fancy” number plates, and 1,178 vehicles were cited for tinted windows, reflecting the system’s broad monitoring capabilities.

The financial impact of these violations is substantial. Seat‑belt offences alone have generated approximately Rs 575.41 million in fines, while helmet-related offences resulted in roughly Rs 111.135 million in penalties. Tinted-window violations contributed an additional Rs 29.45 million. These figures illustrate the scale of non-compliance and the significant revenue generated through automated enforcement.

Authorities have emphasized that this enforcement drive is ongoing. Cameras continue to monitor traffic around the clock, ensuring that any violation is promptly recorded and penalized. Drivers and riders have been urged to strictly follow traffic rules to avoid incurring fines, highlighting the city’s commitment to road safety through digital automation.

The rollout of the e‑challan system represents a major milestone in Karachi’s approach to traffic management. By leveraging technology and automation, the city has reduced reliance on manual enforcement and introduced a system that is both efficient and consistent. As the population adapts to stricter compliance requirements, it is evident that non-adherence carries a heavy financial burden, reflected in the hundreds of millions collected in fines.
