The Pakistan Stock Exchange experienced sustained downward pressure during the past trading week, with the benchmark KSE-100 index declining by 2.7 percent or 4,782 points on a week-on-week basis to close at 171,021.20 points. According to the latest weekly equity market review, persistent geopolitical uncertainty across the region drove widespread risk aversion, prompting investors to pare back exposure across major listed sectors. The cautious sentiment directly impacted market participation, causing average daily trading volumes to fall six percent week-on-week to 696 million shares, while average daily traded values contracted nineteen percent to 99.8 million dollars.
The commercial banking sector proved to be the single primary driver of the broader market pullback, erasing 1,369.56 points from the benchmark index over the five-day period. Additional downside pressure stemmed from the fertilizer sector, which removed 695.96 points, alongside exploration and production equities offloading 585.32 points, cement companies losing 574.56 points, and investment banks paring 275.18 points. On an individual equity basis, United Bank Limited stood out as the largest single drag, pulling 593.84 points off the index. Other major negative contributors included Fauji Fertilizer Company, Habib Bank Limited, Engro Holdings, and Pakistan Petroleum Limited. Bucking the negative trend, refinery stocks provided modest relief by adding 52.49 points, led by gains in Attock Refinery Limited and Cnergyico, alongside minor positive movements in insurance, real estate, paper, and textile weaving equities.
The weekly market retreat occurred despite notable positive developments on the macroeconomic front. S&P Global Ratings officially upgraded Pakistan’s long-term sovereign credit rating to B from B- with a Stable Outlook, attributing the upgrade to ongoing structural reforms under International Monetary Fund programs, stronger fiscal performance, rising foreign exchange reserves, and sustained fiscal consolidation. Simultaneously, state banking data for June 2026 highlighted robust operational performance across the financial system, with total bank deposits expanding 15.2 percent year-on-year to 40.9 trillion rupees, credit advances rising 13 percent to 15.3 trillion rupees, and total bank investments growing 16.4 percent to 42.6 trillion rupees. Furthermore, the local currency maintained relative stability, appreciating slightly by 0.03 percent against the US dollar to settle at 277.87.
Looking ahead, financial analysts anticipate that the KSE-100 index will remain highly responsive to international geopolitical shifts and upcoming corporate earnings announcements. Market observers also expect the State Bank of Pakistan to hold the central policy rate steady at 11.5 percent during its upcoming monetary review until greater clarity emerges regarding global inflation and external account trends. Despite short-term volatility, market valuations remain historically compressed, with the benchmark index currently trading at an attractive price-to-earnings ratio of 7.9 times while offering an average dividend yield of 6.4 percent. Market strategists continue to highlight major capital assets across energy, fertilizer, cement, and manufacturing sectors as key equities to monitor as corporate results roll out.
