Eraj Hashmi, CFA Appointed Head of Finance Secretary’s Strategic Support Unit

The Finance Division has appointed Eraj Hashmi, CFA, to head the Finance Secretary’s Strategic Support Unit (FSSU), assigning him the role with immediate effect and until further orders. Hashmi currently serves as Director Operations and Chief Operating Officer at the Debt Management Office.

Hashmi has been serving as Director Debt at the Ministry of Finance since September 2023. His new assignment places him at the head of a strategic support unit working under the Finance Secretary, adding to his responsibilities within the Finance Division. Before joining the Ministry of Finance, Hashmi spent more than nine years at the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP), where he held several positions linked to treasury and capital markets. His experience at the bank included serving as Wing Head, Business Support and Management for Treasury and Capital Markets.

Earlier in his banking career, Hashmi worked as a Portfolio Manager and Senior Trader for Fixed Income Sales. His experience in fixed income, treasury operations and capital markets has given him exposure to areas that remain closely connected with public debt management and financial market operations.

Hashmi has also served as a Nominee Director at Taurus Securities Limited, a subsidiary of National Bank of Pakistan. His professional background extends beyond financial institutions, as he has also worked in academia as an Adjunct Professor of Finance at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA). At IBA, Hashmi delivered executive MBA electives covering financial modelling, treasury and financial derivatives, fixed income and financial regulations. His teaching experience has complemented his professional work in banking and public-sector financial management.

Hashmi holds an MSc in Finance and Economic Development from the University of Glasgow, which he completed under a Chevening Scholarship awarded by the United Kingdom’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He is also a CFA Charterholder from the CFA Institute in the United States. The appointment brings together Hashmi’s experience across debt management, banking, treasury, capital markets and financial education. His existing role within the Debt Management Office and his earlier experience at NBP provide a background relevant to the strategic and financial responsibilities associated with his new assignment at the Finance Division.
