Rehmat Ali Hasnie Concludes Tenure as NBP President and CEO

The National Bank of Pakistan has formally notified the Pakistan Stock Exchange that Rehmat Ali Hasnie’s tenure as President and Chief Executive Officer of the state owned bank concluded on August 21, 2026, marking the end of his leadership term following a temporary extension granted earlier this month by the federal government. The bank disclosed the development through an official notification to the exchange and requested that the update be communicated to TRE certificate holders. The conclusion of Hasnie’s tenure completes the interim leadership arrangement that had been put in place to maintain continuity at NBP while the process concerning the bank’s next chief executive remained under consideration.

Hasnie’s original tenure was extended for an additional two weeks through a decision by the Finance Division on August 6, 2026. The temporary reappointment was made under Section 11(3)(d) of the Banks (Nationalization) Act, 1974, with the extension becoming effective from August 7. The arrangement was intended to ensure that the bank continued to have executive leadership during the transition period and would remain in effect until the extended term expired or a new President and CEO was appointed. With the extension reaching its scheduled end on August 21, NBP has now formally communicated the conclusion of Hasnie’s tenure to the market.

Hasnie is a banking professional with more than three decades of experience in the financial sector and has been associated with NBP since 2010. During his career at the bank, he held leadership responsibilities in areas including priority sector lending and investment banking before taking on the position of President and CEO. His long association with NBP gave him experience across several areas of banking operations and financial services, while his executive responsibilities included overseeing the institution’s business activities and efforts to strengthen its overall financial position.

During his tenure as President and CEO, Hasnie focused on several areas of the bank’s operations, including efforts to stabilise its loan portfolio, improve key financial ratios and modernise its information technology infrastructure. These areas formed part of the bank’s broader operational priorities as NBP worked to strengthen its financial and technological capabilities. The focus on IT infrastructure was particularly relevant to the bank’s efforts to modernise internal systems and improve the technology supporting its banking operations, while attention to the loan portfolio and financial ratios remained linked to the institution’s wider financial performance.

Before joining NBP, Hasnie held senior positions across Pakistan’s financial and capital market sectors. His earlier professional experience includes leadership roles at PAIR Investment Company, IGI Investment Bank and the Lahore Stock Exchange. His career across investment banking, financial institutions and capital markets provided him with experience in different segments of Pakistan’s financial system before he joined NBP and subsequently assumed senior executive responsibilities at one of the country’s major state owned banks.

In its official disclosure to the Pakistan Stock Exchange, NBP requested the exchange to inform TRE certificate holders about the leadership update following the expiration of Hasnie’s tenure. The notification formally records the end of the two-week extension approved by the Finance Division and marks another stage in the bank’s leadership transition. The development comes as the state owned lender moves forward following the completion of Hasnie’s extended term, with the leadership position now subject to the next appointment process determined by the relevant authorities.
