Google Wallet Launches for Meezan Bank Customers in Pakistan, Advancing Digital Payments

Meezan Bank, Pakistan’s largest Islamic bank, has officially enabled support for Google Wallet, allowing its debit cardholders to make secure, contactless payments using Android smartphones and Wear OS devices. This rollout, which began on March 13, 2025, marks a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing shift towards a more digitally inclusive financial ecosystem.

Through this new integration, Meezan Bank customers can now link their Visa and Mastercard debit cards directly to the Google Wallet app. This enables a wide range of digital transaction capabilities, including in-store, online, and in-app payments. With real-time transaction tracking and seamless contactless functionality, the service eliminates the need for physical cards and offers an enhanced and feature-rich payment experience.

The official launch was accompanied by a high-profile visit to Meezan Bank’s head office by key global stakeholders in the digital payments landscape. These included Mr. Chen Way Siew, Financial Institutions, Networks & Transit Partnerships Lead at Google Inc.; Mr. Abdul Basit, Director Digital Payments – Regional Business Owner Europe & CISMEA at Thales; Mr. Arslan Khan, Country Manager Pakistan at Mastercard; and Mr. Umar Khan, Country Manager Pakistan at Visa. The executives met with Syed Amir Ali, Deputy CEO of Meezan Bank, and the leadership team to discuss the future of digital payments in Pakistan.

This collaboration aims to not only improve the payment experience for users but also accelerate the adoption of digital financial tools across the country. The integration with Google Wallet allows for a wide array of transaction types including peer-to-peer payments, bill payments, and enhanced contactless solutions. It also introduces robust security features like tokenization, which replaces sensitive card data with a unique digital identifier, thereby minimizing fraud risk. Users can authenticate payments using biometric or device-level credentials such as fingerprints, PINs, or patterns, ensuring both security and ease of use.

Commenting on the development, Syed Iftikhar Ul Haq, Group Head Consumer Finance at Meezan Bank, stated: “We are thrilled to partner with Google Pay to offer our customers a seamless, secure payment experience. As Pakistan’s most trusted Islamic bank, this collaboration supports our commitment to digital innovation and will help drive the adoption of digital payments across the region.”

This initiative is part of Meezan Bank’s broader digital transformation agenda, aimed at reducing reliance on cash-based transactions and supporting the development of a cashless economy in Pakistan. The partnership with Google also reflects the growing importance of fintech collaborations in modern banking, particularly in emerging markets where digital payment adoption is accelerating rapidly.

With Google Wallet now available to Meezan Bank customers, Pakistan’s digital payments infrastructure receives a strong boost—one that is likely to benefit consumers, merchants, and the broader financial sector alike. The move comes at a time when demand for secure, real-time, and mobile-first financial services is at an all-time high, positioning Meezan Bank as a frontrunner in the country’s digital banking evolution.
