HBL Microfinance Bank Opens First Islamic Banking Branch in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

HBL Microfinance Bank Limited has launched its Islamic banking operations after receiving an Islamic banking licence from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), marking a new development in its efforts to expand financial inclusion. The launch was marked by the inauguration of the bank’s first Islamic banking branch in Timergara, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Through this initiative, the bank aims to provide Shariah-compliant financial services to individuals, micro-entrepreneurs, farmers and communities seeking banking solutions aligned with Islamic principles. The introduction of these services adds another option for customers who prefer financial products structured according to Shariah requirements, while extending the bank’s existing microfinance activities into Islamic banking.

The new branch is intended to improve access to financial services for customers in Timergara and surrounding communities. Islamic banking operates according to principles that prohibit interest-based transactions and emphasise Shariah-compliant financing arrangements. By introducing this model within its microfinance network, HBL Microfinance Bank aims to reach individuals and small businesses that may prefer Islamic financial products when managing household needs, operating businesses or financing agricultural activities. Microfinance institutions can play an important role in providing smaller-scale financing to customers who may have limited access to conventional banking services. The launch therefore represents an expansion of the bank’s service options, although the overall impact will depend on the products introduced, customer demand and the accessibility of financing for eligible borrowers.

Commenting on the launch, HBL Microfinance Bank President and Chief Executive Officer Amir Khan said the opening of the Timergara branch marked an important step in making financial services more inclusive, accessible and responsive to the needs of people across Pakistan. He highlighted the importance of reaching communities that could benefit from additional banking options and said the initiative was intended to help customers access financial support with greater confidence. The bank’s approach places particular emphasis on individuals, small entrepreneurs and farmers, whose financing requirements may differ from those of larger businesses and established corporate customers. Access to suitable financial products can help these groups manage working capital, invest in productive activities and respond to changing household or business needs.

Established in 2002, HBL Microfinance Bank has developed a presence across Pakistan by providing financial services to customers in underserved communities. Its operations have focused on expanding access to banking and supporting economic activity among individuals and smaller businesses. The launch of Islamic banking extends this role by allowing the bank to serve customers who prefer Shariah-compliant financial arrangements. The initiative also reflects the wider development of Islamic finance in Pakistan, where banks and financial institutions offer products designed to meet different customer preferences and financing requirements. For microfinance customers, the availability of Islamic banking may provide another route to accessing financial services, particularly in areas where the choice of banking products and providers is more limited.

The inauguration of the Timergara branch is the first step in the bank’s Islamic banking expansion, with HBL Microfinance Bank stating that it intends to scale up these operations in the future. Further growth could involve extending services to additional locations and introducing a broader range of Shariah-compliant products for individuals, farmers and micro-enterprises. Successful expansion will require suitable product structures, effective customer guidance, operational readiness and compliance with the regulatory and Shariah requirements governing Islamic banking. The bank will also need to ensure that customers understand the terms, costs and repayment obligations associated with the products offered.

The launch adds to the range of financial services available through Pakistan’s banking and microfinance sector. By combining its existing microfinance presence with Islamic banking, HBL Microfinance Bank is seeking to address a wider range of customer needs while supporting access to formal financial services. The new branch in Timergara establishes its initial physical presence for Islamic banking in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with further expansion planned. The extent to which the initiative contributes to financial inclusion will depend on how effectively the bank reaches underserved customers and provides financing suited to their economic circumstances.
