The National Assembly Secretariat has officially surrendered 472.1 million rupees to the national treasury, marking a significant step in the federal government’s ongoing austerity campaign. This move follows the vision of Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and aligns with the broader cost-saving measures initiated by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The decision to tighten fiscal controls comes at a time when the administration is looking to conserve resources and mitigate the impact of the global fuel crisis resulting from regional geopolitical tensions.
A comprehensive review of the current fiscal year’s expenditures led to several decisive actions aimed at strengthening financial discipline within the legislative body. Notably, the Secretariat has implemented a 21 million rupee reduction in the salaries of Members of the National Assembly. These funds have been redirected into the Prime Minister’s Austerity Fund 2026 to bolster national financial reserves. This salary cut is part of a larger roadmap directed by the Speaker, which aims to achieve overall savings of up to 2 billion rupees through rationalized spending and improved resource management for the remainder of the fiscal year.
Operational shifts within the Parliament are also contributing to these conservation efforts. A substantial number of official vehicles have been withdrawn from daily use to significantly lower fuel consumption. Furthermore, the Secretariat is now meeting its electricity needs through the Green Parliament Solar System, which has reduced the institution’s dependency on the national grid and lowered monthly energy bills. Staffing levels have also been adjusted, with only 200 employees currently performing physical duties on-site. Most of the workforce has transitioned to a rotational duty system, a strategy designed to minimize overhead costs while maintaining the efficiency of parliamentary operations.
Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has issued instructions to further accelerate the reduction of non-essential expenditures. Stringent controls have been placed on all new purchases and services to ensure that every rupee of public money is utilized efficiently. These initiatives are intended to set a precedent for transparent governance and the prudent management of national resources. As these cost-saving measures continue to expand across various parliamentary departments, officials expect to make further contributions to the National Treasury in the coming months.
