NIBAF Pakistan Holds Two-Day Microfinance Risk Management Training in Islamabad

The National Institute of Banking and Finance (NIBAF) Pakistan conducted a two-day professional training programme on “Risk Management and Credit Initiation Techniques in Microfinance” at its Islamabad Campus on October 19 and 20, 2026. The programme focused on strengthening participants’ understanding of credit assessment, risk identification and responsible lending practices within the microfinance sector. Led by trainer Muhammad Nomaan, the training aimed to improve participants’ ability to evaluate borrowers, assess creditworthiness and make informed lending decisions.

The programme addressed the importance of effective risk management in microfinance, where lending decisions require careful assessment of borrowers’ financial circumstances and repayment capacity. Credit initiation is an important stage in the lending process because the quality of information collected and evaluated at the beginning can influence subsequent decisions and the overall performance of a loan portfolio. Through the training, participants explored approaches intended to support more consistent credit evaluations and help identify potential risks before financing decisions are made.

A key focus of the sessions was borrower evaluation and the assessment of creditworthiness. Financial institutions need to examine relevant information before extending credit to determine whether applicants are suitable for financing and whether the proposed lending arrangements are appropriate to their circumstances. Strong credit assessment practices can help institutions make decisions based on a clearer understanding of borrower profiles and potential repayment challenges. The training sought to strengthen participants’ capabilities in applying these principles to microfinance lending activities.

Risk identification was another central component of the programme. Recognising potential risks at the credit initiation stage can help financial institutions improve their decision-making processes and manage lending exposures more effectively. Participants were introduced to the importance of identifying possible weaknesses in credit applications and considering the factors that could affect repayment. These capabilities are relevant to maintaining lending discipline and supporting responsible financing practices across microfinance operations.

The training also emphasized the relationship between sound credit initiation techniques and sustainable portfolio quality. Effective risk management involves more than evaluating individual applications; it also supports the broader objective of maintaining a healthy loan portfolio over time. When credit decisions are supported by appropriate assessment and risk identification, institutions are better positioned to manage lending activities responsibly. The programme aimed to build participants’ understanding of how informed decisions at the beginning of the credit process can contribute to stronger portfolio management.

Responsible lending formed an important part of the programme’s wider objectives. Microfinance services are intended to provide access to financial resources, making it important for institutions to balance lending opportunities with appropriate assessments of borrowers’ circumstances and repayment capacity. Credit decisions that take potential risks into account can support more sustainable lending practices while helping institutions manage their financial exposure. By focusing on assessment techniques and risk awareness, the programme sought to reinforce professional practices that support both lending institutions and the borrowers they serve.

The two-day programme reflects NIBAF Pakistan’s continuing efforts to strengthen professional capabilities across the country’s banking and financial services sector. As financial institutions manage different credit risks and changing customer requirements, staff training remains an important part of developing the knowledge needed for effective lending and risk management. Programmes focused on specialised areas such as microfinance can help participants develop a stronger understanding of the processes that support sound financial decisions.

Conducted at NIBAF Pakistan’s Islamabad Campus, the training brought attention to the practical importance of credit assessment, risk identification and responsible lending in microfinance. Under Muhammad Nomaan’s instruction, the programme was designed to improve participants’ ability to assess borrowers and support informed credit decisions. NIBAF Pakistan said it remains committed to strengthening professional competencies and promoting effective risk management practices across Pakistan’s banking and financial sector.
