NIBAF Pakistan Launches Specialized Climate Risk and Green Banking Program

The National Institute of Banking and Finance Pakistan has announced a specialized day-long face-to-face training workshop titled Adapting to Climate Change for a Sustainable Future, scheduled to take place at its Karachi campus on August 26, 2026. The executive training program aims to bolster capacity across domestic financial institutions as physical climate change impacts, transition risks, and evolving international environmental standards continue to reshape the global financial architecture and asset valuations. As physical climate vulnerabilities and extreme weather events increasingly threaten economic infrastructure across South Asia, domestic commercial banks are facing heightened regulatory and financial pressure to integrate climate-related risk assessments into their core risk management operations. The upcoming session addresses these structural challenges by equipping bank executives with practical framework models to evaluate climate risk exposure, build institutional resilience, and implement sustainable banking mechanisms.

The curriculum is structured around four primary operational modules. Participants will examine the scientific and economic foundations of climate change, including its direct socio-economic impacts on Pakistan’s commercial landscape. The program will also review national and international climate policies, local regulatory guidelines, and compliance expectations set by monetary authorities. Further modules are dedicated to climate risk assessment methodologies, focusing on identifying asset vulnerabilities, categorizing credit risk for financial institutions, and designing mitigation strategies through Environmental and Social Risk Management frameworks, green bonds, and sustainable credit facilities.

The executive workshop is tailored specifically for professionals across key banking functions, including climate change risk and sustainability, credit risk management, finance and business development, and core banking operations. By participating in the interactive sessions, attendees are expected to gain practical insights into recognizing climate-related vulnerabilities, establishing resilience benchmarks, and deploying green financing instruments within their respective organizations.

The workshop will be led by Rashid Azeem, Divisional Head of ESG and Chief Green Banking Manager at United Bank Limited. Bringing more than 24 years of extensive experience in ESG governance, green banking, compliance, and financial crime risk management across domestic and international jurisdictions, Azeem has been instrumental in aligning institutional frameworks with international standards, including IFRS, TCFD, GRI, and SASB. He holds an ESG Specialist certification from the Corporate Finance Institute in Canada, professional certifications from the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors in the United Kingdom, and advanced degrees in economics and commerce from the University of Karachi. The day-long training will run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the NIBAF Karachi campus, with a participation fee of 18,000 rupees plus applicable taxes per candidate. Institutional nominations are set to close on August 25, 2026. The initiative reflects broader efforts by central training bodies to build a resilient, forward-looking financial workforce capable of steering Pakistan’s banking sector through green market transitions and sustainable economic growth.
