Pakistan and Italy have officially formalized a major international partnership aimed at revitalizing the domestic farming ecosystem through modern technical education. The two nations successfully signed a concessional loan agreement worth twenty million euros, which will be strategically deployed to support comprehensive capacity building and specialized extension services across the national agriculture sector. This newly funded initiative is set to operate directly under the umbrella of Pakistan Technical and Vocational Education and Training National Reform Programme, providing a structured mechanism to upgrade the technical skills of the agricultural workforce.
The formalization ceremony took place in Islamabad, where Secretary Economic Affairs Muhammad Humair Karim and Italian Ambassador Marilina Armellin signed the documents on behalf of their respective governments. According to state media reports, this bilateral agreement materializes a shared vision for sustainable economic growth and institutional development. The overarching project, officially titled Professional Capacity Building and Extension in Agriculture, is designed to systematically upgrade the capabilities of local farmers, field extension workers, agricultural trainers, and community stakeholders. By introducing demand driven, highly modern training modules, the project seeks to boost crop productivity, promote eco friendly farming methodologies, and substantially uplift rural livelihoods.
A core component of this bilateral project is the targeted development of specific high value crops that hold massive potential for both domestic consumption and international export markets. The operational blueprint will focus on maximizing the production and quality of olives, pistachios, dates, mushrooms, cherries, grapes, peaches, and almonds. This strategic selection will allow Pakistani stakeholders to directly leverage famous Italian expertise in modern agronomic techniques, blending European technological advancements with the raw, untapped geographic and climatic potential of Pakistan agricultural landscape.
The responsibility for field execution and long term implementation has been assigned to the Pakistan Oilseed Department, which will work in close coordination with provincial agriculture departments nationwide. By decentralizing the training programs, the administrative partners intend to reach remote agrarian communities efficiently. The project is anticipated to act as an economic catalyst by generating a substantial volume of new rural employment opportunities, raising individual producer incomes, and drastically reducing post harvest losses through improved handling practices. Additionally, the initiative plans to strengthen local farmer cooperatives, creating a more unified and competitive framework that elevates Pakistan standing in global agro food trade indices.
