Pakistan continued to expand access to employment opportunities and social protection initiatives in August 2026, with thousands of workers registered for overseas employment while interest-free financing was extended to small-scale businesses and individuals seeking self-employment. The developments form part of broader efforts to improve access to income opportunities, strengthen financial inclusion and support households through employment and affordable financing.
The Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment registered 27,656 Pakistani workers for overseas employment during August 2026. The registration reflects continued participation of Pakistani workers in international labor markets, where overseas employment remains an important source of income opportunities for individuals and households. Access to employment abroad can also contribute to the broader economy through workers’ remittances, which provide foreign exchange and support household consumption and investment.
Alongside overseas employment, the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund continued its financing activities through a network of partner organizations. During August, the fund, working with 24 partner organizations, disbursed 5,169 interest-free loans with a combined value of Rs381.0 million. The financing is aimed at supporting small-scale enterprises, self-employment activities and greater participation in formal financial services.
The interest-free lending programme has also developed into a significant source of financing over the longer term. Cumulative disbursements under the programme reached Rs127.0 billion since 2019. The scale of cumulative lending indicates the continued role of interest-free financing in providing capital to individuals and small businesses that may have limited access to conventional credit. Such financing can help borrowers establish or expand small enterprises, invest in income-generating activities and improve their ability to participate in the formal economy.
The overseas employment registrations and interest-free loan disbursements represent different channels through which economic opportunities are being expanded. Overseas employment provides workers with access to international labor markets, while interest-free lending focuses on domestic income generation and entrepreneurship. Together, these measures can support household earning capacity through both external employment and locally based economic activity.
These initiatives are also taking place alongside efforts to expand access to housing and agricultural finance. Greater availability of financing in these areas can support investment in productive assets, improve access to housing and provide additional resources for agricultural households and businesses. Combined with employment opportunities and small-scale enterprise financing, such measures contribute to a wider framework for improving economic participation and financial inclusion.
The August 2026 figures therefore highlight continued activity across employment and social protection programmes. With 27,656 workers registered for overseas employment and Rs381.0 million distributed through 5,169 interest-free loans during the month, the initiatives provided support through both international labor mobility and domestic financing. The cumulative Rs127.0 billion disbursed since 2019 further reflects the scale of the interest-free lending programme and its role in supporting self-employment, small enterprises and access to financial opportunities.
