Pakistan Railways and the Provincial Government of Punjab are advancing a comprehensive portfolio of joint development projects designed to modernize transit infrastructure, elevate passenger services, improve operational safety, and preserve historic railway heritage across the province. Progress across these inter-governmental initiatives was reviewed during an executive meeting between Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi and Punjab Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb. The joint strategy represents an unprecedented framework of federal-provincial cooperation, marking the first instance in the operational history of Pakistan Railways that a provincial administration has committed large-scale fiscal capital toward national rail network expansion and station modernization.
A major focus of the joint venture involves expanding regional public transit through the development of eight suburban railway routes traversing key industrial and residential hubs in Punjab. Operational teams reported that detailed feasibility studies for three suburban routes have already been completed, while technical assessments for the remaining five routes are undergoing final review to streamline physical execution. To support infrastructure safety, the Punjab government approved a dedicated fund of 9.7 billion rupees specifically allocated for upgrading railway level crossings. Under this safety enhancement framework, high-risk and unmanned level crossings across the provincial network will be systematically converted into manned, gated crossings in structured phases to mitigate collision risks and secure surrounding communities.
Environmental sustainability and station sanitation form another major pillar of the collaborative agenda. Inter-agency teams evaluated progress on the Punjab Chief Minister Green Railway Corridor initiative, which encompasses extensive ecological landscaping and tree plantation drives across more than 40 kilometers of rail corridors. Concurrently, ongoing sanitation operations managed under the Suthra Punjab campaign are being executed across passenger terminals to maintain heightened cleanliness standards, enhance platform hygiene, and improve overall passenger comfort. Additionally, civil works regarding the reorganization and physical upgradation of the circulating area at Lahore Railway Station have entered their final construction phase, with project completion slated for next month.
Preserving historical architecture while upgrading public infrastructure remains an integral objective of the joint development plan. Under the Punjab Chief Minister Railway Heritage Preservation Initiative, specialized conservation and architectural restoration work will commence in its initial phase across the historic railway stations of Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Taxila. By pairing structural modernization with heritage conservation, the federal and provincial authorities aim to transform major rail terminals into secure, eco-friendly, and culturally rich transit hubs that serve public mobility requirements while supporting long-term economic activity.
