Pakistan Stock Exchange Adds Over 200,000 Investors in 2026 as Youth Participation Rises

Pakistan’s stock market has recorded a significant increase in investor participation during 2026, with the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) adding more than 200,000 investors during the year and its total investor base crossing 683,000. Data shared by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) shows that 26,843 new investor accounts were opened in October alone. Young Pakistanis played a major role in this expansion, with individuals aged 18 to 30 accounting for 55% of the new accounts registered during the month. The figures indicate growing interest in equity market investment among younger individuals and small investors.

According to the SECP data, people aged 18 to 30 opened 14,634 accounts in October, making this age group the largest contributor to new registrations. Their participation accounted for more than half of all new accounts added during the month. Investors between the ages of 31 and 45 opened another 9,290 accounts, showing that market participation is also expanding among individuals in the next age bracket. The increase in younger investors suggests that the stock market is attracting a broader section of the population, although sustained participation will depend on investor awareness, access to reliable information and understanding of market risks.

Small investors accounted for 77% of the new registrations recorded in October. Their contribution highlights the growing role of individual participants in the expansion of the PSX investor base. Large investors opened 801 accounts during the month, while 42 corporate accounts were also registered. The figures show that new participation is not limited to one category, but individual investors continue to make up the largest share of new accounts. Easier access to investment services and account-opening procedures has been identified by the regulator as one factor supporting wider market participation.

The gender breakdown showed that men opened 22,878 new accounts in October, representing approximately 85% of total registrations. Women opened 3,923 accounts, accounting for the remaining 15%. Although male investors continued to represent the larger share of new registrations, the number of accounts opened by women reflects their participation in the expanding investor base. Increasing women’s access to financial information, investment services and market education could help broaden participation further. The latest figures also provide a basis for tracking whether the gender distribution of new investors changes as the market attracts more first-time participants.

Regional data showed that Punjab recorded the highest number of new investor accounts in October, with 14,891 registrations. Sindh followed with 7,643 accounts, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa added 1,894. Islamabad recorded 1,419 new accounts, followed by Balochistan with 370 and Azad Kashmir with 340. Gilgit-Baltistan contributed 150 accounts, while overseas investors opened another 136. The distribution indicates that Punjab and Sindh accounted for the largest portions of new registrations, while investors from other regions and overseas Pakistanis also contributed to the expansion.

The increase in investor accounts has taken place alongside efforts to make participation in the capital market more accessible. The SECP said that opening investment accounts at the PSX had become easier, helping individuals enter the market through more convenient procedures. During 2026, Pakistan’s stock market also recorded 13 public offerings, providing additional opportunities for investors to participate in listed companies and other market offerings. Public offerings can widen access to capital market investments, while also giving companies opportunities to raise funds through the market.

The Pakistan Mercantile Exchange (PMEX) also reported an increase in participation, adding 1,077 accounts in October. Its total investor base reached 61,915 by the end of the month. The growth in accounts at both the PSX and PMEX reflects wider engagement with organised investment markets in Pakistan. However, the two exchanges offer different types of investment products and operate under their respective market structures, making investor education and an understanding of product-specific risks important for participants.

SECP Chairman Dr. Kabir Sidhu said the regulator was working to make investing easier and safer while protecting the rights of investors. He highlighted transparency and effective market supervision as important factors in maintaining confidence in Pakistan’s capital markets. Regulatory oversight is particularly relevant as the number of individual investors increases, since new participants need access to clear information, fair market practices and mechanisms for addressing complaints. The regulator’s focus on investor protection is intended to support participation while maintaining confidence in the market’s operations.

The SECP is also conducting a nationwide awareness campaign with the objective of increasing Pakistan’s stock market investor base to 2.5 million. The target represents a substantial expansion from the current base of more than 683,000 investors. Achieving it will require continued efforts to explain how the capital market works, how accounts can be opened and what risks investors should consider before making investment decisions. Awareness initiatives can also help individuals distinguish between long-term investment strategies and short-term market activity, particularly as more young people enter the market.

Market performance has provided another point of interest for investors. According to SECP data, the KSE-100 Index delivered a return of 43.5% during fiscal year 2025-26. While the index performance reflects the market’s movement over that financial year, returns can vary across different periods and individual investments. The growth in investor accounts therefore needs to be viewed separately from index performance, as a rising number of registrations does not automatically indicate that all new investors have achieved positive returns.

The addition of more than 200,000 investors during 2026 and the opening of 26,843 accounts in October highlight the expansion of Pakistan’s capital market participation. Young people aged 18 to 30 and small investors were the main contributors to the latest monthly increase, while regional registrations showed participation across the country. With the SECP targeting 2.5 million investors, the next phase will depend on maintaining accessible account-opening services, strengthening investor education and ensuring effective supervision. Continued attention to transparency and investor protection will remain important as the PSX seeks to accommodate a larger and more diverse investor base.
