Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Launches Electric Vehicle Fleet for Islamabad Traffic Police

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized the adoption of electric vehicles as a critical strategic maneuver to reduce the nation’s reliance on imported petroleum and protect dwindling foreign exchange reserves. During a ceremony held to mark the handover of a new electric fleet to the Islamabad Traffic Police, the Prime Minister highlighted that transitioning to eco-friendly transport is no longer an option but a necessity for economic stability. He urged provincial governments and various law enforcement agencies across Pakistan to replicate this model, noting that such sustainable initiatives are essential for modernizing the country’s infrastructure while addressing fiscal challenges.

The initial phase of this transition saw the Interior Ministry deliver a primary batch of 15 battery-powered electric vehicles to the capital’s police force, with plans already in place to expand the fleet significantly in the coming months. These specialized vehicles boast an impressive range, capable of covering 350 to 400 kilometers on a single full charge. The technical specifications indicate a high level of operational efficiency, with fast-charging capabilities allowing for a 60 to 90-minute turnaround, while standard charging cycles take between six and eight hours. This technological shift is expected to drastically alter the operational dynamics of urban patrolling in the capital.

Financial projections for the project suggest substantial long-term savings for the national exchequer. Each electric vehicle is estimated to save approximately 0.55 million rupees per month compared to traditional petrol-powered alternatives. This high rate of return means that the initial procurement costs of the vehicles could be recovered in as little as 13 to 14 months. For their deployment on Islamabad’s key avenues, each vehicle will be operated by a specialized team consisting of a captain, a driver, and two responders, all dressed in dedicated uniforms.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended his appreciation to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and the leadership of the Islamabad Police for their swift execution of the project. He reiterated that the move toward electrification is a dual-purpose strategy that serves both the environment and the economy. By reducing energy dependence and lowering the cost of public service operations, the government aims to create a more resilient and fiscally responsible administrative framework. The successful rollout of these vehicles in the capital is expected to serve as a benchmark for future green energy transitions across different sectors of the government.
