NIBAF Pakistan to Hold Trade-Based Money Laundering Training in Karachi in November 2026

NIBAF Pakistan has announced a three-day executive training programme on International Trade and Trade-Based Money Laundering (TBML), scheduled to take place at its Karachi Campus from November 24 to 26, 2026. The programme is designed for banking professionals and officers working in trade operations, compliance, anti-money laundering, anti-trade-based money laundering, trade relationship management, trade processing, trade management systems and internal audit. The training will run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM each day, with a participation fee of PKR 60,000 plus applicable taxes per participant. Nominations will remain open until November 22, 2026.

The training will focus on international trade activities and the risks associated with trade-based money laundering, a method through which the movement of goods, trade documentation and commercial payments can be misused to disguise the origins or movement of illicit funds. Financial institutions involved in import and export transactions must assess trade documents, payment arrangements, customer information and transaction patterns to identify potential irregularities. The programme is intended to strengthen participants’ understanding of trade-related risks and regulatory requirements, particularly for professionals responsible for processing transactions, monitoring foreign exchange activity and maintaining compliance controls.

The programme will feature Muhammad Akram Zaki, who brings nearly 40 years of experience with the State Bank of Pakistan, including two decades in its Foreign Exchange Operations Department. During his career, he headed key divisions covering remittances, foreign exchange monitoring, export and import overdues, and subsidies. He is a certified State Bank of Pakistan Banking Services Corporation master trainer and a former senior joint director. He also received the organisation’s first Performance Improvement Award. His professional contributions include work related to foreign exchange fraud detection, WeBOC digitisation, V-11 and V-20 reporting reforms, and foreign exchange policy guidance. He has also represented SBP Banking Services Corporation before institutions including the Federal Investigation Agency, National Accountability Bureau, Customs and the Federal Board of Revenue, as well as in court proceedings. He currently serves as Head of Regulatory Affairs for Trade and Outward Commercial Remittances at United Bank Limited. His academic qualifications include a Master of Commerce from Karachi University, an MBA from the Institute of Business Administration and JAIBP.

Another facilitator, Salim Thobani, has more than 22 years of experience in trade and compliance. He currently heads the Foreign Exchange Monitoring Unit at Meezan Bank and previously held senior roles related to trade anti-money laundering at National Bank of Pakistan and Standard Chartered Bank. His experience in foreign exchange monitoring and trade compliance is relevant to professionals responsible for reviewing international trade transactions and identifying potential risks within banking operations.

Muhammad Umar Farooq will also contribute to the programme as a subject matter expert with more than 10 years of regulatory and operational experience. He currently serves as a deputy director at the State Bank of Pakistan. His participation brings regulatory and operational perspectives to the training, which is aimed at professionals who must understand how trade activities are handled within the banking system and how compliance requirements apply to related transactions.

The fourth facilitator, Muqalid Baloch, works as a Business Solutions Architect at Pakistan Single Window and has more than nine years of experience in banking and financial technology. His areas of expertise include digital payments, digital wallets, digital banking, trade finance, system integration and regulatory compliance, with a focus on digital transformation and cross-border trade. His background connects technology-driven trade processes with the compliance responsibilities of financial institutions. As trade documentation and transaction processing increasingly rely on digital systems, understanding the relationship between technology, trade finance and regulatory controls is important for banking professionals.
