National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with PowerChina|Integrity Energy Storage (Shanghai) Technology Co Ltd (I²-ESS) to explore business and financing opportunities across small and medium-sized enterprises, commercial businesses and corporate clients. The agreement was signed at NBP’s head office on October 12, 2026, and establishes a framework for potential cooperation in financing, business referrals, cross-selling banking products and services, and exploring green financing initiatives.
The agreement reflects a shared interest in connecting businesses, particularly those operating in renewable energy, energy storage and related industries, with appropriate banking and financing solutions. Under the proposed collaboration, the two organisations intend to identify commercially viable opportunities that could support business expansion and contribute to the development of sustainable energy-related sectors. The arrangement also aims to create a channel through which prospective borrowers referred by PowerChina|I²-ESS can explore NBP’s financial services.
The signing ceremony was attended by senior representatives from both organisations. NBP was represented by Imran Sarwar, President of National Bank of Pakistan; Naushaba Shahzad, Group Chief of IDG; Usman Shahid, Group Chief of CIBG; and Hamad Rasool, RE-ID Faisalabad. PowerChina|I²-ESS was represented by Si Min Zhou, Global Chairman, and Chengyang Yao, Chairman for South Asia. The participation of senior officials from both sides highlighted the institutional nature of the proposed cooperation.
A central element of the MoU is the exploration of financing opportunities for businesses across several segments. Small and medium-sized enterprises may require funding to expand operations, acquire equipment or strengthen working capital, while commercial and corporate clients may seek financing for larger projects and infrastructure-related investments. Through the framework, both parties intend to identify suitable business requirements and explore how NBP’s banking products could support commercially viable proposals. Any financing would remain subject to the bank’s applicable assessment procedures, policies and approval requirements.
The agreement also provides for lead generation and cross-selling of banking products and services. Lead generation can help a bank identify potential customers and financing requirements through business networks and referrals, while cross-selling allows existing or prospective clients to consider additional services suited to their needs. For NBP, the arrangement could create opportunities to expand its customer base, develop relationships with companies in emerging industries and increase its reach among businesses connected to renewable energy and energy storage projects.
Green financing is another area identified for future exploration. As renewable energy and energy storage projects develop, businesses may require financial support for equipment, infrastructure and related commercial activities. NBP and PowerChina|I²-ESS intend to explore potential projects in these sectors and assess opportunities that align with the bank’s strategic priorities and business objectives. The MoU establishes a basis for discussions and cooperation, but it does not itself confirm a specific financing package, investment amount or approved project.
The proposed collaboration could also help NBP position itself as a preferred banking partner for financing opportunities referred by PowerChina|I²-ESS. This would provide a potential route for the bank to engage with companies associated with energy storage, renewable power and allied industries. For the Chinese company, cooperation with a local banking institution could help prospective business partners explore financial services relevant to their commercial plans in Pakistan. The practical benefits will depend on the opportunities identified and the terms agreed upon for individual transactions.
The agreement comes as businesses and financial institutions explore ways to support investment in energy-related infrastructure and sustainability-focused activities. Renewable energy and energy storage can involve significant upfront costs, making access to suitable financing an important consideration for project developers and related enterprises. By bringing together NBP’s banking services and PowerChina|I²-ESS’s business connections, the parties aim to identify opportunities that offer commercial value while supporting activity in these sectors.
The MoU marks a step towards closer institutional cooperation between National Bank of Pakistan and PowerChina|Integrity Energy Storage. Its focus extends beyond conventional lending to include business referrals, customer relationships, cross-selling and the exploration of green financing. While the agreement provides a framework rather than a guarantee of future funding, it creates a basis for both organisations to assess potential projects and develop mutually beneficial business opportunities in Pakistan’s commercial and sustainability-oriented markets.
