NBP Wins ABF Award 2026 for Solar-Powered Telecom Infrastructure Project

National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) has received the Sustainable Infrastructure Initiative of the Year award for Pakistan at the Asian Banking and Finance Corporate and Investment Banking Awards 2026. The recognition was presented in Singapore for the bank’s role in arranging a Rs850 million syndicated project finance facility to support the installation of solar energy systems at cellular tower sites. The transaction involved advisory, structuring and financing support for Infraelectric (Pvt.) Limited, a renewable energy solutions provider working on cleaner energy infrastructure.

The financing facility is designed to support the deployment of solar photovoltaic systems at telecommunications tower locations. Cellular towers require a reliable power supply to maintain network connectivity and telecommunications services. Solar energy systems can help meet part of this demand through renewable electricity, potentially reducing dependence on conventional power sources and improving energy efficiency at telecom sites. The initiative also supports efforts to reduce the environmental impact of infrastructure operations as businesses seek alternatives to energy-intensive systems.

NBP advised, structured and arranged the Rs850 million facility using Islamic financing. The syndicated structure brings financing together through participating institutions to support the project’s funding requirements. The bank’s role covered the development of the financing arrangement and the provision of advisory support to Infraelectric. The award recognises this contribution to a project that connects financial services with renewable energy investment and the modernisation of telecommunications infrastructure.

Infraelectric is focused on renewable energy solutions, and the project reflects the growing role of specialised energy providers in supporting the transition towards cleaner power sources. Solar photovoltaic systems convert sunlight into electricity and can be deployed at sites where a consistent energy supply is required. At cellular tower locations, such systems can contribute to more energy-efficient operations, although the overall benefits depend on installation capacity, site requirements and how solar generation is integrated with other power sources.

The recognition also highlights the role commercial banks can play in financing infrastructure projects that have both economic and environmental objectives. Arranging funding for renewable energy initiatives requires financial structuring alongside an understanding of project costs, implementation requirements and the operational needs of the borrower. By supporting the solar tower project, NBP has demonstrated how corporate and investment banking services can be used to mobilise capital for infrastructure development beyond conventional lending activities.

Commenting on the award, Usman Shahid, Senior Executive Vice President and Group Chief of NBP’s Corporate and Investment Banking Group, said the recognition reflected the bank’s growing role in enabling sustainable infrastructure and mobilising capital for projects with economic and environmental value. He also reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to developing financing solutions with clients and partners that contribute to a more sustainable and resilient Pakistan.

The Asian Banking and Finance Corporate and Investment Banking Awards recognise performance, innovation and achievement across the Asian banking sector. NBP’s award places its financing work within a broader regional context in which financial institutions are increasingly involved in funding energy transition projects and infrastructure improvements. The recognition specifically relates to the bank’s support for the solar energy initiative rather than indicating an award for all of its sustainability activities.

For Pakistan’s financial and telecommunications sectors, the project illustrates how Islamic financing can support renewable energy deployment at operationally important sites. Telecom networks depend on continuous electricity to provide connectivity to individuals and businesses, while energy costs and supply reliability remain important considerations for infrastructure operators. Solar installations may help address some of these requirements while supporting efforts to reduce reliance on conventional energy sources.

The Rs850 million facility also demonstrates the potential for collaboration between banks and renewable energy providers in developing infrastructure projects. NBP’s advisory and financing role, combined with Infraelectric’s renewable energy expertise, provides an example of how capital can be directed towards energy-efficiency improvements in the private sector. The longer-term impact will depend on the implementation and operation of the solar systems, including their contribution to energy use and emissions reduction at the supported tower sites.

The award marks a notable recognition for NBP’s corporate and investment banking operations and highlights sustainable infrastructure as an area where financial institutions can support practical investment. Through the transaction, the bank has helped arrange funding for a project intended to improve the energy profile of telecommunications infrastructure while advancing the use of renewable power in Pakistan.
