Punjab’s Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar housing programme has received more than 1.7 million registrations, while loan disbursements and house construction continue across the province. The latest progress was reviewed during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, where officials presented figures on applications, financing, completed houses and loan recoveries. According to the briefing, more than 225,000 loans have been disbursed under the programme, while 128,718 houses have been completed. The provincial government has also approved inviting fresh applications, with the chief minister directing the relevant authorities to meet the programme’s remaining targets.
The figures presented at the meeting indicate continued demand for the housing initiative, which is intended to help eligible households finance the construction of their own homes. More than 1.7 million people have registered through the programme’s online portal, reflecting the number of applicants who have expressed interest in accessing the facility. Of the loans disbursed so far, 171,597 beneficiaries have received their second instalment. The phased release of financing is linked to the progress of construction and the programme’s disbursement process, allowing beneficiaries to receive funds as they move forward with building their houses.
Construction activity has also advanced, with 128,718 houses reported as completed. A further 62,600 houses are nearing completion, according to the briefing. These figures provide an update on the programme’s progress beyond registration and loan approvals, showing the number of projects that have reached completion and those still under construction. The chief minister instructed officials to maintain progress and ensure that the targets set for the initiative are achieved within the required timelines. The latest review also included directions to continue monitoring implementation so that financing and construction activities proceed without unnecessary delays.
One of the figures highlighted during the meeting was the programme’s reported loan recovery rate of 97.6%. Instalments amounting to Rs22.29 billion have been recovered from beneficiaries. Loan recovery is an important part of housing finance programmes because repayments can support the continued circulation of funds and help maintain the financial capacity to extend assistance to additional households. The reported recovery level provides an indication of repayments received under the scheme, although the briefing did not provide a detailed breakdown of the repayment period, outstanding loan balance or the number of beneficiaries with overdue instalments.
Following the review, Maryam Nawaz approved the invitation of fresh applications for the Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar scheme. The decision is expected to allow additional eligible applicants to seek financing through the programme. The authorities have been directed to work towards the completion targets and maintain the pace of implementation. The fresh application process will require the relevant departments to manage registrations, assess applicants and coordinate the release of loans in line with the programme’s requirements. The government’s latest instructions place emphasis on completing ongoing houses while continuing to process new applications.
The meeting also reviewed progress under the separate Apni Chhat, Mehfooz Chhat initiative. The application process for this scheme has been completed, with 3,055 applicants receiving loans worth a combined Rs1.216 billion. Construction and expansion work on 532 houses has been completed under the initiative. The figures show that the programme has reached a smaller group of beneficiaries compared with Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar, while providing financing for housing-related construction and expansion. The two initiatives were included in the meeting’s broader review of housing support and implementation targets.
The progress figures highlight several stages of the housing programme, including registrations, loan disbursements, instalment payments, completed construction and repayments. The difference between the number of registrations and completed houses also reflects the scale of work still required to move applicants through the financing and construction process. With more than 62,000 houses reported to be nearing completion, the next phase will depend on timely construction, monitoring and the release of remaining instalments to eligible beneficiaries.
The reported 97.6% recovery rate and Rs22.29 billion in collected instalments were also notable elements of the review, as the financial sustainability of a loan-based housing initiative depends on borrowers making repayments and funds being managed effectively. At the same time, the number of houses completed and nearing completion will remain central indicators of the programme’s practical progress. The government has not provided further details in the briefing on the total financing allocation, average loan size or the geographical distribution of completed houses.
The latest review reflects the provincial government’s continued focus on expanding access to housing finance through the Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar programme and the related Apni Chhat, Mehfooz Chhat initiative. With fresh applications approved for the main scheme, authorities now face the task of balancing new registrations with the completion of houses already under construction. The chief minister has directed the relevant departments to achieve the programme’s targets, while the reported figures offer an update on the scale of financing and construction activity recorded so far.
