Meezan Bank Limited (MEBL), Pakistan’s largest Islamic bank, has announced a major leadership transition with the appointment of Dr Syed Amir Ali as its new president and Chief Executive Officer, effective December 30, 2025. The development marks the end of an era led by founding president and CEO Irfan Siddiqui, who has played a central role in shaping the country’s Islamic banking landscape over the past two decades.
The appointment was formally disclosed through a notice submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), confirming that Dr Syed Amir Ali will assume the top executive role at the listed Islamic bank. Irfan Siddiqui, who has served as the founding president and CEO since Meezan Bank’s early years, will continue to remain associated with the institution as a member of its board of directors, ensuring continuity at the governance level.
In its communication to the PSX, Meezan Bank stated that Dr Syed Amir Ali’s appointment reflects the board’s decision to entrust leadership to an experienced professional with deep expertise in Islamic finance, corporate banking, and strategic management. The board also placed on record its strong appreciation for Irfan Siddiqui’s leadership and lifelong contributions to the bank and the broader financial sector.
During his tenure, Siddiqui is widely credited with transforming Meezan Bank into one of Pakistan’s most successful corporate institutions and a benchmark for Islamic banking not only domestically but also internationally. Under his leadership, the bank expanded its footprint nationwide, strengthened Shariah-compliant financial offerings, and helped establish Islamic banking as a mainstream component of Pakistan’s financial system. The board described his role as foundational, noting that his vision and commitment were instrumental in laying the groundwork for the Islamic banking industry in the country.
Dr Syed Amir Ali brings more than two decades of experience in finance, treasury, investment, and corporate banking to his new role. According to information available on Meezan Bank’s official platform, he holds a strong academic and professional background that spans finance, accounting, business administration, and law. His career includes work with both domestic and international organisations, reflecting a blend of local market insight and global best practices.
Professionally, Dr Ali is a Chartered Financial Analyst from The CFA Institute, USA, a Chartered Certified Accountant from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants in the UK, and a Chartered Accountant from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan. In addition, he holds an MBA from Hamdard University, Karachi, and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Karachi, giving him a multidisciplinary perspective on banking, regulation, and corporate governance.
His association with Meezan Bank is longstanding. Dr Syed Amir Ali first joined the institution in 2006, where he played a key role in leading the corporate and investment banking group during a critical growth phase. In 2018, he transitioned to BankIslami Pakistan Limited, gaining further leadership experience in the Islamic banking sector, before rejoining Meezan Bank in 2023.
Industry observers view the appointment as a strategic move that balances continuity with renewal. With Islamic banking continuing to expand in Pakistan amid regulatory support and rising customer demand, the leadership transition comes at a time when Meezan Bank is expected to focus on digital transformation, product innovation, and sustained growth while maintaining strict Shariah compliance.
As Dr Syed Amir Ali steps into the role of president and CEO, stakeholders across the banking sector will be watching closely to see how the bank builds on its legacy while navigating evolving market conditions. Meanwhile, Irfan Siddiqui’s continued presence on the board is expected to provide stability and institutional memory during this important transition phase for Pakistan’s leading Islamic bank.
