The Government of Pakistan has reappointed Rehmat Ali Hasnie as President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Bank of Pakistan for a period of two weeks, effective August 7, 2026. The short-term extension will remain in force until the newly appointed President and Chief Executive Officer assumes office, whichever occurs earlier.
The reappointment was made by the Finance Division through Notification No. F.1(9)Bkg-III/2022-673 dated August 6, 2026. The federal government exercised its powers under Section 11(3)(d) of the Banks (Nationalization) Act, 1974, to extend Hasnie’s tenure at the state owned bank. The decision provides continuity in the bank’s top leadership while the process for appointing a new President and Chief Executive Officer is completed.
National Bank of Pakistan informed the Pakistan Stock Exchange about the government’s decision through a notice issued on Thursday. The notification states that Rehmat Ali Hasnie has been reappointed as President and Chief Executive Officer with effect from August 7, 2026, for two weeks or until the new head of the bank assumes office, whichever is earlier.
The arrangement means Hasnie will continue to oversee the bank’s leadership during the interim period. Rather than establishing a fixed two week tenure regardless of the appointment process, the government’s notification specifically provides for the extension to end once the incoming President and Chief Executive Officer takes charge. This gives the bank an interim leadership arrangement while the transition to its next permanent head takes place.
The reappointment also ensures that the National Bank of Pakistan continues to have an active President and Chief Executive Officer during the transition period. As one of Pakistan’s major banking institutions, the bank’s leadership is responsible for overseeing its operations and implementing decisions across its banking activities. The federal government’s latest notification therefore provides a temporary continuation of the existing leadership structure until the new appointment is finalised and the successor formally assumes office.
