Kot Addu Power Company Limited has announced a major restructuring within its executive leadership team, naming Waqar Ahmed Khan as the company’s new chief executive officer. According to an official corporate notification submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange, the board of directors has approved his appointment for a fixed three-year operational tenure. This high-profile executive transition is scheduled to formally take effect on July 1, 2026, marking a new chapter for one of the country’s most established corporate energy producers as it navigates structural transformations within the national power distribution grid.
Under the regulatory parameters defined in the stock exchange filing, Waqar Ahmed Khan will remain at the helm of the independent power producer until June 30, 2029. He steps into the chief executive role to succeed Shahab Qader Khan, an industry executive who had previously taken charge of the utility provider back in January 2025 under what was initially intended to be a matching three-year executive term. The corporate notification distributed to public market shareholders did not outline the specific underlying factors or administrative decisions that prompted this mid-term leadership adjustment.
The newly appointed chief executive brings an extensive professional background to the organization, possessing more than thirty years of specialized operational experience centered entirely within Pakistan’s complex water and power infrastructure. His deep domain expertise bridges technical electrical engineering, large-scale thermal and hydro power generation architecture, and high-level corporate management systems. He initiated his professional trajectory in the public sector at the Water and Power Development Authority, where he functioned as a professional field engineer focused on advanced grid controls, systematic system protection, industrial instrumentation, and centralized SCADA software implementation.
Following his foundational tenure in public utilities, Mr. Khan successfully transitioned to the private sector in 2005, stepping into a series of top-tier administrative roles within the independent power producer market. He initially served as the Chief Technical and Commercial Officer for Star Power Generation Limited from 2005 through 2009, subsequently transferring his skills to Star Hydro Power Limited to occupy a parallel executive seat until 2011. Recognizing his strategic foresight and commercial performance, the board elevated him to the position of Chief Executive Officer of Star Hydro Power Limited in 2012, a major leadership responsibility he successfully sustained for nearly a decade until 2021. In September 2021, his corporate portfolio expanded further when he was named Chief Executive Officer of Rousch Pakistan Power Limited, later advancing to guide the National Power Parks Management Company as its chief executive.
Mr. Khan’s executive track record is supported by an academic foundation derived from both domestic and international institutions. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology in Peshawar, which he followed with a Master of Science in Control and Information Technology from the University of Manchester. To integrate his technical training with advanced business principles, he also earned a Master of Business Administration from the Lahore University of Management Sciences. This technical and commercial background is expected to assist him as he assumes control of the Kot Addu facility, which runs a multi-fuel fired generation plant boasting a massive installed capacity of approximately 1,600 megawatts, preserving its position as a vital cornerstone of the country’s aggregate base-load energy supply.
