Zong and Zindigi, powered by JS Bank, have launched Z-Wallet, an embedded banking service that brings regulated digital financial services directly into the My Zong App. The initiative combines Zong’s telecommunications and technology platform with Zindigi’s regulated Banking as a Service infrastructure, allowing customers to access selected financial services without downloading or switching to a separate banking application. The launch represents a significant expansion of the My Zong App beyond conventional telecommunications services and introduces banking capabilities within a platform already used by millions of customers.
With more than 22 million monthly active users, the My Zong App provides Z-Wallet with access to a large existing digital customer base. Customers can now use the service to access selected financial facilities through the same application they already use for their telecom related needs. The embedded finance model is designed to reduce the steps required to access digital financial services by placing banking functionality directly within an established consumer platform. This approach also reflects the growing integration between telecommunications, financial technology and digital services in Pakistan.
Z-Wallet is built on Zindigi by JS Bank’s regulated banking infrastructure and operates under the regulatory framework of the State Bank of Pakistan. The service combines Zong’s technology platforms and customer touchpoints with Zindigi’s digital banking and financial technology capabilities. Through this arrangement, customers can access banking services without needing to establish a separate digital destination for every financial activity. The partnership brings connectivity, financial services and digital technology together through a single platform and login experience.
The initial Z-Wallet offering includes interbank fund transfers to any bank in Pakistan through RAAST, utility and internet bill payments, and mobile top ups. Customers can access these services through a single login and PIN within the My Zong App. The companies also plan to expand the range of services available through Z-Wallet, with proposed additions including nano lending, a Z-Debit Card and specialised Zong bundles. These planned features are intended to develop Z-Wallet into a broader financial services ecosystem integrated within the My Zong App.
The launch event was attended by Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar along with other dignitaries and government officials. Speaking at the event, Tarar said Pakistan’s digital transformation should translate into greater access, opportunity and convenience for citizens. He described Z-Wallet as an example of telecommunications and financial technology coming together to expand access to digital financial services through platforms that are already used by millions of Pakistanis. He also linked such private sector partnerships with the government’s Digital Nation Pakistan vision, particularly in areas including financial inclusion, digital payments and participation in the digital economy.
Zong Head of Marketing Sajid Munir said the launch represents another step in the company’s expansion of its digital product portfolio into financial services. He said the initiative is aimed at building an integrated ecosystem for Zong customers and creating additional avenues for digital inclusion. According to Munir, the partnership combines China Mobile’s global technology expertise with Zindigi by JS Bank’s financial capabilities to bring connectivity, technology and finance together through a single digital platform.
Zindigi Co Founder and Chief Officer Noman Azhar said the future of financial inclusion would increasingly involve making banking available within digital ecosystems that people already use rather than requiring customers to visit separate banking destinations. He described Z-Wallet as embedded finance at scale, combining Zong’s nationwide digital reach with Zindigi’s regulated Banking as a Service infrastructure. The objective is to place financial services directly within the customer journey and reduce the barriers associated with accessing digital banking.
The partnership reflects a wider global movement toward embedded finance, in which financial services are integrated directly into digital platforms, applications and consumer ecosystems. Rather than requiring users to interact with a separate traditional financial services channel, embedded finance allows selected banking and payment functions to become part of existing digital experiences. In Pakistan, the model could provide telecom companies and other large consumer platforms with new ways to distribute regulated financial services while giving financial institutions access to broader customer ecosystems.
Z-Wallet has already shown early traction following its soft launch. According to the companies, the service has onboarded approximately 22,000 verified wallets and processed more than 12,000 transactions within a few weeks. The early activity took place before significant marketing investment, with the companies describing the initial results as an indication of organic customer demand for integrated digital financial services. The performance provides an early indication of how customers may respond when banking capabilities are placed within an application they already regularly use.
The service also has access to a growing digital distribution channel, with the My Zong App recording more than 500,000 new downloads each month. This expanding user base provides Z-Wallet with an established platform through which additional financial services can potentially be introduced and scaled across Pakistan. The combination of an existing telecom customer base and regulated banking infrastructure gives the partnership an opportunity to expand digital financial access without requiring customers to adopt an entirely separate application.
Z-Wallet also forms part of Zong’s Diverse Products and Services portfolio and supports the company’s focus on AI Enablement as it continues integrating intelligent technologies across its digital ecosystem. The initiative is intended to simplify customer interactions, improve service delivery and support more personalised digital experiences. By adding financial services alongside telecommunications and digital offerings, Zong is positioning the My Zong App as a broader digital platform rather than a service limited to traditional telecom functions.
The launch of Z-Wallet marks a further convergence between Pakistan’s telecommunications and financial technology sectors. By combining Zong’s customer reach with Zindigi’s Banking as a Service infrastructure, the companies aim to make digital financial services more accessible through an application already used by millions of people. As additional services such as nano lending, debit cards and specialised bundles are introduced, Z-Wallet could further expand the role of the My Zong App as an integrated digital and financial services platform.
